Another auction K22

I have a soft spot of K22's, so at an auction last weekend another one followed me home. This one looks to be vintage 1951, (but has incorrect stocks from the 60's). I'm looking around for another set of more accurate target stocks. It hadn't evidently been shot in many years, the turn line not through the blue. The action was so "gummy" it would hardly cycle, but an hour at home took care of that, of course then it needed a little "trigger adjustment". It's all finished and ready to join it's siblings.

Like yours I have an 18-2 that had newer targets. It just never felt right to me. I found a pair of period diamond targets last year and got them. It now seems right, however it cost plenty to just have the diamond centers.

Nice snag, H Richard! You seem to be moving in the right direction with this one, and its younger siblings may come off losing status by comparison. I'm loving my '48 vintage K-22 and have no desire whatsoever to get any of those new-fangled ones with Model numbers, etc.

Before I spent the major buckage necessary to get a pair of authentic '51 vintage factory targets, I might search out a nice pair of period (diamond) magnas, since so many of the K-22s came with those. I've tried several other stocks on my K-22 and its similar aged K-38 stablemate, but I just keep coming back to the original magnas. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Very nice. I recently bought a K22 Model 17-4 that was in a dealers inventory and had never been sold. Original Box, tools unopened and the original S&W wax paper with the original creases in it. Target Hammer, Target Trigger, Target sights with red front ramp and white outline rear and target stocks. No scratches or cylinder marks. I way over paid for it, so I am not sure if I will even shoot it. My 617 actually shoots fine and for a new gun has a surprisingly nice trigger.

A 17-4 with a red ramp front sight is rather unusual. Factory standard was a Patridge front sight. I think if it was mine I might consider a letter on that one.

The Red Ramp was an option on the -4 that are rare. One of the reasons why I paid so much for it.

Back when I had my gun shop in the 70s and 80s I would go to Smith once a month with a box full of guns and for really cheap, they would replace triggers, stocks and hammers on my new inventory for Target Hammers, Target Stocks, Target triggers and white outlined rear sights. I would take a tour of the Springfield Arsenal (Again) have lunch, pick them up and head home. Was a nice day drip each month. Prior to the pinned front sights though, if you had the plain blade (like on my other K-22s) you were out of luck if you wanted to have the red insert in the front blade unless you wanted to have the blade machined to slope and include the red insert.
