Darn spell checker! The winner is brucev.

I have three more hunting books to pass along. We'll let this karma go until interest wanes. The first book is "Hunter" by J. A. Hunter. He was a hunting guide in Africa. I discovered this book when I was in junior high in the 50's. Must have read a half dozen times. It's probably the Genesis of my firearms fascination. Next is "The Mankiller of the Foothills", a novel by Elliott Whitney. Finally, I have "To the Heart of the Nile" by Pat Shipman. Probably most of you have read Sir Samuel Baker's writings about exploring the Nile and shooting in Ceylon. This is a different slant on his trip up that river with his "bride". I found it fascinating. Bet you will too.

About Baker's "bride", do you mean Florence, the Austrian girl he bought in a Turkish slave market?

He did eventually marry her, and Sir Samuel and Lady Baker were very famous. But Queen Victoria would not receive them at Buckingham Palace, as they were known to have been intimate before marriage.

Sam had to disguise himself as a Muslim to shop for her, abetted by Muslim friends. The slavers who captured her murdered her family.

I have a copy of, "Hunter", so will leave that karma chance for others. But it's a fine book. I, too, read it first as a kid, was fascinated, and became interested in safari hunting.

The sequel, "Hunter's Tracks" is also good.
