There is a thread going on most memorable car. I have made and spent a fair amount of money in my time. I have spent money on cars, guns, wine , women and song. I have squandered a lot of the rest.
But when it comes to cars, the one that I wish I had back is a Shelby GT-350. It would beat the big Goodyears on the pavement!
Way back then I would drive a long ways and often through the night. On this particular night I was driving South through Kentucky into Tenn. My Shelby started running tough, and missing. I was thinking some kind of fuel blockage or fuel pump problem. I checked the fuel line and gad was flowing.
What to do? I get into the middle of Nashville about 4AM. It's running rough, rough. I pull into a Holiday Inn that was like down hill from the state capital. I get the night clerk to let me in so I can use the phone. In the yellow pages I see an ad- 24 hr towing, experienced in all kinds of high performance engines. I call 'em up. They say they are real close, be there in 5 minutes. A guy drives up in a junky homemade wrecker. Oh man. Does it run? I start it up, just barely. If I thought I could have made a get away, I would have. He says, follow me to the shop. We turn down a side street and are into , well it's a slum. Like very undesirable part of town.
Can it possible get any worse? Of course it can . Young guys, listen up. When things start getting bad, they are likely to get worse. You can count on it. Prepare.
We pull up to this ugly barn looking building. The doors open, and in I drive. What have I got myself into? This place has a dirt-grease floor. In fact the entire place just looks Greasy. A dog comes out to check me out. Yep! He's greasy. Then this little old man comes out half awake and yawning. He is the man. We have a brief conversation and he's the guy who has worked on all those high performance motors. He recommends that I walk down to nearby cafe and have some coffee. So walk I did. In about a half an hour When I got back my car was repaired. The GT -350 had a Ford high performance distributor with 2 sets of points. It used a mechanical advance, with a counter weight and spring on each set of points. One of the springs had broke and was flopping around. Every so often it would short out one of the points. He explained that he didn't have an exact replacement spring. But he looked around and found one on the greasy dirt floor. I don't recall how much, but didn't charge me that much. My car was running fine and I was out of Nashville before you can say 'does this kind of stuff always happen to you?'
Sometimes. If you boys are real nice, I might tell you about the time I picked up the naked gal who was standing on the side of the road.
