How could you tell? If JohnHL is right - and I believe he is - it's the same gosh darned slide. :rolleyes:

More importantly, though I'm not sure any photos would show it, would be the light touch of the stone or emery paper to dehorn some of those nasty shaving edges it has....:D

Does that say SLPD on the frame? Could that mean St. Louis PD?
I don't recall seeing St. Louis Police Officers carrying the 639.
BTW I also prefer adjustable sights on 4" and longer barreled pistols.

Now that I blow it up it looks like SLFD. St. Louis Fire Department? Maybe an Fire Inspector's pistol?
Looks really good with the round trigger guard and it also looks like it has the latest sideplate.
If I were to purchase a single stack 9mm, those would be the characteristics I would want it to have.

I never found out what organization SLPD stood for but you are correct in assuming it's not St Louis, they were never issued 639s.

A 915 slide should work - there are differences in the 910 slide that would prevent it from working.
 
Why change slides when you can install aftermarket adjustable sights?
 
Just an FYI, my 915 and 5906 (built just before the billboards) slides do not interchange.
 
My STG 6906 slide fits my STG 5906 like it was fitted to it at the factory.
It looks and handles like an Astra A100 (me likey).
15 rounds and a stumpy barrel.
I really like it, but swapped the slides back out because I hate change.

Not to dispute your word, surfgun, but I can't imagine why those two slides would not interchange.
Mine do like they were made for each other.
However I realize there are exceptions to the rules at S&W.
I would like to learn, in the interest of all things S&W, where the areas of mechanical conflict arise between your two examples.

I re-eximined my 915 and 5906. The slide of the 5906 does work on the 915 frame. On the 5906 frame, the slide stop will not go in with the 915 slide, the barrel does not cam down enough to allow the slide stop to go in.

I sometimes forget that the concept of interchangeable gun parts is limited by the accuracy and consistency of the production machinery and operators. There are always tolerances. And when those tolerances inevitably "stack-up" somewhere in a series of thousands of products, it results in the occasional unexpected incompatibility.
Perhaps a little rearward pressure on the muzzle as you insert the slide stop will make it go. It might take three hands, but sometimes that works for me.

Let me throw something out........ IIRC ......after the "Tactical guns" came out some autos had heavier/beefier /"box rails" that were associated with the early hand built PC guns.......

Are you saying some standard (non TSW) models (like the 5906 for example) were built with TSW rails instead of the standard rails?
If that is so it would certainly explain the one-way interchange.

Well, whatever the necessary alignment of stars is ... I haz it.

The latest from the lab: S&W 3906 with a Smith 915 slide. Feeds and ejects dummy cartridges with no problems a't'all. :D




I'm debating keeping the two-tone look, Ceracoating the slide something else (for protection or looks) and/or having the slide milled to accept a regular 3rd Gen fixed sight.

Again IIRC; yes........ the heavier box rails started on the PC guns then the TSW........ and then all.......vaguely remember some threads and pictures.... about transitioning from what was learned from the early hand built PC guns to the factory guns........ why have two slide designs???????

I had never thought much about it - this is the first I've had - but I'd have to agree. I kinda like it!
