What's Google Hangout and how does that work?

My understanding is that it is used to contact people on your hangout list.
In order to have them meet you somewhere at a specific time and date..
Or you can set up an event on your gmail calendar for a date - time in the future and have your hangout list notified that way.....
I don't use it, don't understand it but it's there......
If I want to meet someone somewhere I just call them..

I had one from an actual friend but, I cant see how to mail them back? I just sent her a regular email instead. I chat with her sometimes, but she is hard to hear and my hearing aint very good as it is.

It's a group messaging app with video and photo features. All I've ever seen apps like that used for is to coordinate events and such in a predefined group of people, like a little league team or a fraternal organization, or a group of volunteers at an event, like a youth soccer tournament or a county fair . . .
It’s just a messaging app, no different from Yahoo Messaging or iPhone iMessages. I suppose there are group things you can do with it, but it’s basically a person to person messaging app. I’m “talking” to my son with it right now while I surf the forum.
