Today I looked at a very clean Model 19-5 (1982?), 2.5", nickel finish, factory wood grips, outstanding shape, no box. Dealer was asking $599 on consignment. Does that sound reasonable?

Not a great deal to me,(a bit high for a -5?) but not bad either. probably near the going rate for the 2.5" depending where you are.

"Dealer was asking $599"...........

that is more than top $$. $450 - $500 is a more reasonable price.

a S&W model 19-3, 2 1/2 " with original box just sold for $550 on GB.

I think it might be a decent price. My track on the blued version of the 19 snubbie has the Average Price Trend pushing hard on $600. The nickel version would command a higher price, other things being equal, IMO.

I have a Model 19 -5 with a 4" barrel and the original target grips in blue and I am asking only $500 +shipping for it and it comes with 2 speedloaders. Therefore I would say to pass on it because that dealer is way high for a Model 19.

$550 would be a good price. The 2 1/2 gun is worth $150 or so more than the 4 inch. Nickel is no where near as available as blued. 5 Wire is pretty much on the market right now.

It sounds a little high but certain areas get more for the 2.5" barrel than the 4" or 6". Being that it is nickel and a 2.5" barrel, you would not be "over paying" but it certainly is not a smoking deal. I say try to get him down some.

Placing a value on something usually comes down to the answers to two questions: "Are new ones like it available?" And "Do I want it?"

If the answers are "No" and "Yes," pay the man.

Thanks for the replies. Personally, I wouldn't pay $599 but maybe closer to $500. As far as negotiating, they have a 14 day consignment rule where they have to contact the seller before dropping the price and it's a newly consigned gun. I'll have to keep my eye on it in the next couple of weeks and see where they end up. If it breaks $500 and no one else grabs it up, I may re-consider. It's funny because this dealer has great prices on new guns but the consignment stuff seems a little high.

I just started collecting the older 22cal revolvers and now i'm into the older police 38 specials. I stay away from the $900 to $1,000 stuff but i jump on the $400 to $600 price range. Mainly because its the $900/$1,000 stuff i'm seeing for $400/$500. Remember its only paper money and we can't take it with us when we leave this earth. My point is its the condition and how bad we want it. Is it rare? Does it fill a gap in my collection too? If the list price is a tad too high can i haggle it or trade in something that i don't need too.

The dealer may get a % of the consignment price too. The stuff i want to collect is going thru the roof price wise its not affordable nor cheap anymore.
