Here are a couple recently acquired revolvers with new Ahrends grips:

Model 25-2

Model 18-4

The wood for the 18-4 was Cordia. Don't know the wood used for the 25-2 grip.

Another set of N Frame Square Ahrends.

I need another gun to put these on.

Considering a 28-2 a guy has for sale:

The set on the 25-2 look like cordia, too. I'm a big fan of Ahrends, and put them on all my Smiths. The Retro Combats are my favorite.

I've got fat, stubby hands, and the Retro Combats give me better control than any other stocks I've tried.

I like Ahrends grips.
I always order them unfinished.
I like to re-profile them to suit, and apply several coats of Tung oil with some Turpentine mixed in to promote penetration.
I like Cocobolo, dark as I can get.
He lets customers specify comments as to the type and color of grain they like.
Fit has been good.

Best,
Rick

My favorite Ahrends for square butt N-frames are the Tactical finger groove grips. The flat front strap on these grips really help to provide a consistent grip. They also fit my hand perfectly.

The pair below on my Model 58 are cordia wood.

And here is another set of Ahrends stocks on my 629 Backpacker.

These are Retro banana grips in Cocobolo.

They fit my hand well. I use this gun with 44 special mostly and medium power 44 mag.

I just got the grips, so haven't tried them yet at the range.

May be painful with full mag loads, but I can always put the Hogues back on...

Here are a few more of my Ahrends grips.

I've been back and forth more times that I care to remember between the Retro Combats and the Tacticals and, for now at least, I've settled on the Tacticals. Both styles have their strong points and I can shoot well with either, but the Tacticals seem to fit my hands better.

Pretty sure the 25-2 set is Moradilo, a darker wood more resembling walnut. I really like Moradilo on blued guns when it has nice grain. Love the yellow/orange Cordia on stainless and nickel. As for what style Ahrend's fit me best, smooth tactical and retro-target. My fingers are a bit wide for the finger-grooves on the retro-combat and grooved tactical.

There is nothing as nice as oiled cocobolo. Unfortunately that wood was recently placed (June 2013) in CITES Appendix 2 status, which limits its export to finished goods. The closest replacement is likely moradillo, or old-fashioned black walnut.

While I like the look and feel of Ahrends Retro grips, I honestly think I shoot better with their tactical grips. The flat front snaps the revolver into alignment, one hand or two. The sharp edge of the tactical's fillet skins my knuckle under heavy recoil with .44 magnum, and merits a little adjustment. The oiled finish is very easy to repair and maintain.
