Seems like I remember reading the women in the USA doing the same job had a horrendous death rate, as they were the first ones to fly newly built aircraft off the lines to bases all over the country.
Even knowing the danger, the women kept doing "their duty" to free up the men for combat roles.
The term "Greatest Generation" didn't just apply to the US citizens, sailors, soldiers and Marines, Great Britain and our European allies had it MUCH worse than we did.
