Why would you buy a compact then add an extended mag ?(my hands don't fit the compact well) it seems like that just makes it a full size with a shorter barrel.

I'm trying to figure out what want to cc. Already own a 6906 and a 22C.

My main cc is a M&P 9c, carried with the 12 round mag. I usually have at least one 17rnd mag as backup. When the 9c is in my lampstand by my bed, it has the 17 round mag in it.. I have a full size 9 also, but I actually shoot my compact better.

So what do y'all do when the stadard mag just puts 2 fingers on the grip?

I find that I shoot better on the shorter grip with my pinky finger somewhere under the grip. When I use the extended mag I tend to shoot low with the smaller pistols. I shoot a Shield 9 (always with the 7 round mag) and a Sig P238. Maybe it's because I always practice that way.

I carry the Shield with an extended mag or the seven round with pierce extension.

A couple reasons.

Conceal Ability and limit of 10 rounds in my state.

If you're going to print, it's most likely going to be by the handle of the gun. In that sense, the 7 round mag is superior. I do like the idea of carrying an 8 round spare magazine, considering the "cat would be out of the bag" at that point. That said, mag consistency would probably serve you better in a stressful situation. For some reason I shoot better with the pinky under the 7 rounder. It wasn't initially that way, but it ended up that way with practice.

X-Grip...The mags on right side of pic have X-Grip installed.

Carry it that way, practice with it that way. It's really no different than a J-Frame with stock grips, for most people.

Which falls into another post. It seems this pretty much makes it a full size with a short barrel.

that was my logic; my first "non .22" a couple years ago was a 9c. It was more of a "too good to pass up deal" so figured i had something to learn on. Did ok with it but wasnt real fond of the "feel" so did not have plans for it as a carry piece. Picked up a full size mag and xgrip and it was better at the range; but at that point thought i would get a full size 9 as that one does feel perfect in the hand. And for me, i shoot better with it over the compact.
For a potential carry gun i just picked up a new Shield PC; obviously smaller than my full size yet it felt real good in my hand and i shot it well also. So maybe for me, going small or large worked best, the middle ground did not. And of course what works for me means nothing to someone else.
;)

I've held a shield and it still felt too small. I guess I need to go rent something and shoot it.

renting one may be a good idea.
My main .22 is a Buckmark with the larger wood grips, but i wanted another plinker so grabbed a compact MP .22 which does mirror the Shield size wise pretty closely. I think being able to comfortably and accurately switch between both .22's helped me do the same with my 9's. Not an issue at the range to run 5 mags worth in the FS 9, then grab the Shield and also do well with it.

My 22c is actually larger than the shield. I was hoping they were closer as I love the way the 22c feels.

I'm trying to figure out what want to cc. Already own a 6906 and a 22C.

Let me ask you this.. What do you want the compact for? If it is just a range gun, and it does not fit your hand well, then it is time to look at another model.

If it is for CC then ask yourself this.. If this does not fit my hand well, what does? Also, you say that your hands do not fit the compact well... how do they not fit well? If it is just a matter of your pinky "floating", then try the "extended" 12 round mag. It has a place for your pinky. Truthfully, if you make a point of shooting your 9c a fair amount, you will find that the problem fixes itself. I speak from experience. At first my pinky "dangled" below the mag. I made a point of shooting it a lot with the non pinky rest mag. While at first it was really strange and I did not do my best with it, I am stubborn and I kept at it. After awhile I noticed that my groupings were getting better and better. Then I noticed that I did not even notice my dangling pinky. I now naturally just curl my pinky below the mag. This even works with different small guns, like my Sig 938.

My husband did not do this and he still would rather carry the 9c with a 17 round mag. Me, I don't care either way. We do have some x grips, but truthfully we don't even use them with the 17 rounders. We found them to be more of a pain than anything.

So I guess you have to decide why the 9c does not fit your hand well. If it is the pinky, then that is easy to learn how to deal with, it is just conditioning. If it is something else, then maybe the 9c is not the model for you. Hope this helps.

Never got used to only 2 fingers on my colt mustang 380 so picked up a ruger lc9s with extended mags and been much happier. Personal preference I guess...

I carry my 9c in a Crossbreed OWB holster. I usually have the 12 rnd mag w/ the little extended base plate in it. I find that the 17 rnd hits the seat back in my truck and tries to push the gun forward which makes it uncomfortable. So 12er in the gun and 17er in my left pocket. OTOH, we sometimes take the dog for a walk which involves a short 2 mile truck ride. Then I switch mags. 17er in the gun and 12er in my pocket.

To me it is what it is. Compact for carry, you do not want that longer magazine for printing and comfort sake. You are not going to take the gun out for target practice (punching paper) punching paper constantly. You will take her out for practice which should be at closer range anyway (Not 25 yard shots). Usually the smaller for carry (Most people) the better. I have the 15 round magazine for range, paper punching from longer yardage.

If you are just buying the extended mag to ....

...fit you fingers they have extended mags that mostly give finger grip room and maybe 1 or 2 extra rounds. They don't increase the body to anywhere near full size and they are still a compact pistol.

Have you looked in the M&P 9c?
My Shield has an extended mag that gives my pinkie better purchase but increases the bulk only slightly at the and of the grip.

My full size 5943 is very light alloy frame/ss slide and I'd carry it if I didn't have compact pistols that I liked.
