Right now I am using small rifle primers with 14.5 grains of 2400 with 110 FMJ bullet. Have about 2500 SR primers, so not short. Was wondering if anyone uses small pistol primers in their reloading for the .30 Carbine? I use 14.4 grains of 2400 with small pistol primers with a 158 grain SWC in my .357 Mag. 27-2 3.5 inch and it works fine. So why not in the .30 Carbine?

The main difference between a SRP and a SPP is that a heavier cup is used in the SRP to better withstand a higher chamber pressure. Using a SPP presents a possibility of resulting in a pierced primer. I have no experience in doing that, so I can't say how likely that is. However, you can load high pressure .357 Mag with SPPs, and they do not rupture to my knowledge. About the only way to know is to try it. Or maybe you can find someone willing to swap his SRPs for your SPPs.

For the most part the 30 Carbine is very similar to handgun Magnum cartridges. While 2400 doesn't require a Magnum class primer the firing pin in the 30 Carbine is powerful and it's also a floating firing pin. You really don't want a thinner softer cup subjected to that. If it were me I would be using at least a SRP but better yet a SPM primer is a CCI #41 primer.

Thanks for the info. Like I wrote I have 2500 SR primers. I only load .30 Carbine in the rifle category. I load 10 different handgun calibers and have a mix of about 30K LP & SP primers. Was just curious is all. Thanks again.

I no longer have any carbines but always used a CCI-400 small rifle primer when I handloaded for the cartridge. I think the CCI-550 small pistol magnum primer is about the same thing.

An out-of-battery ignition can be prevented using proper primers. Carbines are unique in this manner and caution should be taken.

I've always used SR primers and never had a problem.

CCI small rifle and small magnum pistol are the same per CCI. I wouldn't hesitate to use those. CCI also recommends against using CCI small rifle in AR because of floating firing pin (use magnums, br2 or 41s), but folks use anyway. However, the M1 carbine isn't floating and the CCI small rifle are fine.

That is absolutely incorrect!
While the size dimensions are the same the cup thickness is not.
CCI-550 primers have a cup thickness of .017" while the CCI-400 primers have a cup thickness of .020". They are NOT the same and the pistol primers should not be used in place of the rifle primers but the reverse is safe.

Additionally, the M1 Carbine Does have a floating firing pin so it can be sensitive to softer primers.

Please be very careful when giving advice when it can put others in danger. Do not post incorrect information which can effect safety!

The CCI500 is .017". The CCI550 and CCI400 are .020" (same dimensions, same priming compound, same primer per CCI). The CCI 450, BR4 and #41 are all .025". This only applies to CCI.

I just looked at the chart.

This is why CCI recommends against using CC400 in AR15, it is like using small pistol magnum in it.
