Since all of you have been so helpful with the Victory questions I've asked, I have another. A friend owes me some money and offered me a S & W .38 special he's had for a while. He said he got it at a pawn shop and doesn't know anything about it. It's a 4 inch barrel, blued, it's shinier than the Victory finish, # C271XXX. What I think it is. K frame pre model 10 1948-1954. Am I close? Any idea on worth? He wants to square a $300.00 debt.

Thanks in advance

It's most likely a 1953 ship date. If the gun is in good mechanical condition and retains most of the bluing, it's probably worth $300.

It seems to have a problem with the trigger, rapidly squeezing the trigger locks it up, it doesn't seem to return all the way. Maybe a weak spring or gummed up. Finish shows its age. Action seems tight, fires good if you take your time with the trigger pulls. I don't think I'll settle the whole debt, but I'll make a deal.

That serial indicates a post war M&P (C prefix used 1948-67). $300 would be about market value IMO. I agree that a good cleaning solves about 95% of problems with older revolvers.
