ANOTHER Snake ID…

I hate snakes, so I was happy I saw this one from the inside of my car…drove around it and no harm was done. It was in a Florida swampy forested area…any idea what it is? I was leaning towards Banded Water Snake or Moccasin…

Thanks…We had just left the park after hiking 2 miles and not seeing any snakes or gators. This area has Moccasins, Rattlers, Copperheads, and Coral Snakes…I prefer the Beach where we only have Sharks and Portuguese Man O’ War…

Best I can tell without a good picture of the head head is a Cotton Mouth. A banded water snake will look the same in many ways but has smaller stripes under the mouth and does not have the hood over the eyes. The moccasin also has a thick line to the eye. Also has the cat like pupils.

OK this is a prime example of why live snakes become DEAD snakes when I am involved. I am NOT going to get close enough to a suspect snake to see what his eyes look like, what shape it's head may be, what colors or types of stripes a snake has before I decide whether or not he is dangerous. It is not going to happen. Man developed sharp long handled tools to protect himself and that's why we are near the top of the food/prey chain.

I looked at the OP's picture fullsize on the Postimage site. Using Golphin's pictures as references, I have no doubt calling that a Cottonmouth. Also, the body looks way too heavy for any racer species.

Florida no poisons water snacks look a lot like cotton mouths. They also are aggressive and will bite viciously when provoked

You can tell a snakes sex by turning it over and looking at the anal plates.
Most snakes do not appreciate that.

Florida has a lot of water snakes and some look a lot like a Cotton Mouth. The bullseye on the side of the body of a lighter colored one will tell that it is a Cotton Mouth Older snakes may be to dark to see the bullseye on the body. The hood over the eyes and cat eyes is another sign. A banded water snake looks a lot like one but will have small vertical stripes under the mouth and rround eyes.

Round pupil= non-venomous

if you had only gotten out of the car and took a closeup of it's pupil.....

Went buy to check on a work site coming up and saw this little buddy. Actual my wife saw it, I walked right past it! An eastern diamondback rattlesnake approx. 18" (I didn't get too close). Single button, no rattles yet. Let it go at wife' suggestion. If I see it next week, I won't be so generous.
