RIP John Motson, broadcaster and soccer commentator at 77. If you were ever in England and watched "Match of the Day" (MOTD) on a Saturday night, you would know his voice. I first heard him commentating on radio, which was the only way to get live football back in the day. (Yes, I said football, 'cuz that's what it is) Even then they never announced in advance which game was going to be broadcast, and you only got the second half.
Good sports commentary is an art, and John had it it in spades. Interviewing tricky club managers also tests your skills. Scroll down the page in the following link and check out the video of him interviewing Brian Clough. Cloughie modeled the picture next to "opinionated" in the dictionary. Given the way he chewed on Motson and MOTD back in the 70s, I dread to think what would say about modern sports commentary and TV presentation.
