Found a M-66-2 with a 3" barrel yesterday. One of my GRAIL guns too!! Woo Hoo!

Serial is AHJ16XX which puts it at early 1985 production. SCS&W shows a special run for Ashland in 1985 of 3" guns but shows a serial prefix of ALU.

Any thoughts? Simply an Ashland gun but with a slightly early serial #??

I'm no expert, but I own a few 3" 66's.

My 66-2 3" is serial ANA76XX. I was told by someone who knows that it was an Ashland order revolver. I was also told that there were two Ashland orders. My guess is that yours is probably one of those. Sorry I'm not more help.

Congrats on a superb revolver! Regards 18DAI.

I can recall back in 1989 to 1990 three inch Treasury guns being available from a few Dealers I knew. I'd just started on the Hwy Patrol and the State had frozen all of our wages. I was too broke to buy one! LOL.

I'd imagine this is probably one of the Ashland guns.

18DAI- Please contact me. I would like to talk about the possible purchase of one of your 3" Md66's. Thanks.

I bought mine in June, 1985 and my dealer ordered it for me from Ashland. S/N AHL55XX.

I paid $278.00 out-the-door. I wonder if I could get my money back, it being a used gun now, and all?

Buff,

You did pretty well at $278. I had to pay $550 for mine.

Though I do still have my original 1972 M-66 no dash 4" that cost me $141.

I saw a 3in Mod.66 at an auction awhile ago. It was in well-used to beat condition. Looked like a cops gun and had even been dropped a time or two. Stag grips and an old beat-up holster.

It went for over $600!

bravastar1 I'm not selling my 3" 66's. Thanks anyway. Regards 18DAI.

I'm no expert but i feel i obtained a good deal on two 3" treasury agent 66's. Neither one has a turn line .Not a hint of use. 100% Like new. I gave this gentleman 900 for both of them. He really needed the money. Thinking back ,i could have got em for less. Also bought a factory polished snubby 66 from same. Ahrends all around.

I picked up two in Harrisburg Pa. in 1988-89. I told a gunsmith/dealer who was doing some work(action job) on my 2.5" 19 that I wished I could find one of the 3"ers I'd read about. At the time the article implied tht there were only several hundred made most/some for the Calf DOJ. Thought it would be the perfect carry gun. He said there was a wholeseller(around Harrisburg) that had some 3" 66s sitting on a shelf that he hadn't been able to move.I had the impression they had been there for years.

He called me a few days later and said he'd picked one up. I went half expecting to see a 2.5" gun. I think it was like $270 OTD. At that price I had him get a second one for my Dad (retired police officer). Dad decided he liked my 640 better.

For whatever reason,(I remember waiting 5-6 months for a Sparks Summer Special holster) I continued to carry the 19 until I caught the 3914 and 3913NL bug.

Today both 3"ers are in the safe (one's unfired the other has <100rds through it) wearing checkered Spegel boot grips. One will go to each of my boys.

About 5 years ago I came across another, a 66-4 3". An "older gentleman" wanting a smaller gun had traded it for a 2" J frame. It had been carried a lot but only shot a little. It was a little scuffed up; but with a little scotch brite pad time and another set of Spegel's it now splits CCW duty, still in the 20 year old Sparks holster, with my 3913. It has also become my primary Pennsylvania "mountain gun".

How do you get both the 9mm and the .357 in that Sparks holster? Did the leather stretch THAT much in 20 years?

(Sorry. Couldn't resist. Look how you phrased that. I'm easily amused, I guess.

I think they make a pretty couple. I know they are the best in breed.

With the price of new, and old, Smiths, I am hoping if they hang out together they might breed.

I'm hoping the pup is a "Stocking Dealer PC6906" in .357sig. But with my luck I'll get a litter of 4" heavy barrel 547s

Hey Frank237
I have an Ashland Shooters Supply 66 3" which I sent for a letter on. The letter states in part, in May of 1985 S&W produced a special run of 4195 units for Ashland Shooters Supply. These guns were the first group of 3" barrels produced and serial numbered in AER, AHL, AHJ, & ANA prefix series. Since this date S&W has produced the 3" variation for various distributors. I would say your gun is an Ashland gun!
