Any feedback or opinions on the 5" model 27-5's? Good, bad, indifferent?

Also, what is your opinions on 5" barreled N-frames in general? Thanks!

I and a few others up here think the 5 inch model 27-2 is the best balanced 27-2 of the different barrel lenghts but opinions vary. I really like N frames and to me the S&W L frame and N frames were made to handle full house 357 loads and the K frame not so much.

Here's my nickel 5 inch

Model 27s

If I recall my revolver history correctly, the 5 inch was Skeeter's favorite. Any of you old enough to remember my favorite gun writer of the 1970s?

Skeeter

Oh yeah! Waited for Shooting Times every month. He was a big believer in the 5" 27. Probably the reason I like them too. Well, 6", and 3 1/2" are pretty nice too. :D

I used to have a 5" M27. It was a fine revolver.

Yes, it was Skeeter's favorite .357. I believe he owned five of them, over the years.

Five inch revovers are my favorite. I have a a 5" Triple Lock .44, a 5" 2nd model .44, two 5" 3rd model .44s, and a M27 converted to a 5" .44 Special. Also have a 5" M544 .44-40.

I've also had a couple of 5" .32-20 S&Ws. My 5" Colt Offical Police in .32-20 is a great shooter.

My five inch "357 Magnum" is one of my favorite revolvers and is extra special due to being shipped during my birth year. It shoots great and the five inch seems to balance perfectly in the N frame. The other I own is a 27-3 FBI commemorative that is new in the case so it's pretty doubtful it will ever be fired.

Mr. Hoser, as you can see 5" seems to be well liked. One is on my want list too. I have 4", 6" and a 6.5" N's. The 4" packs well. All shoot well.

What's the manufacture date on the 27-5? Does it have the frame or hammer nose firing pin?

According to SCS&W III, the -27-5 was made 1989-1992, plus 110 more in 1997, to use up existing parts, IIRC. The -5 had longer stop notches on the cylinder.

Yes, hammer-mounted firing pin.

The 5" is my favorite N frame barrel length. I have 2 629's and 2 627's in that length. The look and the balance is perfect.

I mentioned this in another thread some time back. Carefully remove your target stocks and install a pair of magnas. I did so on my 5 inch 27-2 once and they remain there today. The balance, feel and overall appearance is near perfect IMO. I have always preferred magnas on short barreled N's and targets on 6/6.5 inch and greater guns. To me, the target stocks look out of proportion on the short guns. My 29-2 4 inch now carries magnas, as do a few others I have. I also, again just for fun and variety, put a set of magnas on my 25-2 6 1/2 inch with the high partridge front sight. It looked remarkably like a triple lock or early hand ejector.

Again, I just prefer the look....makes them appear longer and sleeker. Also changes the balance point and each handles differently. Warning- not recommended for shooting hot loads.....just for the pleasure of handling and appearance!

How about some pix? :)

I purchased a 5" in nickle about 3 years ago. Nice but I would much rather have a 3.5" model. I have been unable to locate a barrel to change it. I continue to scan GB and GA hoping.

I almost bought a 5" bbl. Model 27-2 back in the early 1980's, but the regulation required 4 OR 6 inch bbl. I was a rookie back then and not quite the risk taker I am now. I bought the 6" Model 27-2, but if I had it to do over I would have bought the 5" model and taken my chances... live and learn.

Model 27

I own 2 Model 27-3 "First Magnum" 50th Anniversay ones. One is in the wood box, registered with all the paperwork.
The other is unfired, like new and no box. Both are beauties.
As others have stated, I too would like to find a 27-2 with a 3 1/2" barrel.
I may have to sell my un-boxed one to do so. Otherwise the missus may want a new dishwasher.lol!
Wonder if there are buyers interested in the 50th Anniversary model with the engraving without the box? Well, will keep my eyes open for a 27-2 as mentioned. Would be a sweet shooter I bet.

I have a 5" 27-5, and I love it. Blasphemy alert: I have no use for recessed chambers. They basically have one function, to frustrate anyone who wants to chamfer the chambers. I have a set of heavily-modified Ahrends grips on mine, and it points wonderfully.

There definitely IS something well balanced-looking of that 5" barrel. Almost as if the frame was built for that length barrel. NICE!

The 5 inch 27 is my favorite Bbl length. Actually its probably my favorite overall bbl length in any of my revolvers.

The vast majority of my collection is at my home in Southwest Colorado. I'm still wintering in Southern California and I won't be returning there for another few weeks. I will be happy to provide pictures of "magnas on N's" when I get back assuming anyone is interested.

Gun porn? Always!

Seems few want to address your questions about 27-5s but, I own one that started life as a -5 and when I purchased it, it had a cracked frame. Sent it back to factory and they replace frame with a -6. Shoots as good as any -2s(plus it had the modern engineering changes) I've owned and I think John Taffin did a side by side review on these two different guns(-2 and -50) some time back and may be viewable on the internet? Bought mine because of the cracked frame was cheap at the time even with the factory work involved to get it up and running.

Until just recently I had two 5" N-frames in 357 Magnum. I just sold the 27-2 because I acquired this:

It is a 5" pre-M27 made in late 1954. It has the original stocks, numbered to the gun.

I have 3 other 5" N-frames and am seriously considering cutting a 6-1/5" pre-25 down to 5" (it is shooter quality, not collector grade). Five inches is the ideal barrel length for the 44 frame size...at least in my opinion. (smile)

27-2 5"

Carried a five inch 27-2 for years on patrol most guys had Colt Pythons 6 inch barrel out shoot them when it came to range time. 30 yrs later still have it and in good shape.

Here is Model 27-2, 5" Bbl. S/N N109XXX with it's original
stocks. I bought this gun new in late 1973, and have had
it ever since. It has not been fired since leaving the factory.
