I'm looking for a good DVD that outlines basic self-defense with a handgun. I'd like for it to address a number of circustances - at home, in the car, etc. I would also like some drills that I can practice at home and at the range. MidwayUSA lists 4 pages of self-defense DVD's, so I was wondering if anyone had suggestions.

Anything Jim Cirillo put out was good. I haven't seen his vids (I need to get them), but read his book. The guy saw the elephant multiple times and knew his stuff beyond comprehension. He may not cover every thing that you want to learn, but will definately send you in the right direction.

Yeah, I've got the Crimson trace one. I really liked it, even though it was mostly an advertisement for their grips. I would like something like that, just more in-depth and with more drills.

When I went to MidwayUSA, I was looking for something by Ayoob. I found two videos but they didn't get good reviews. The reviewer said the self-defense one was mostly Ayoob sitting in a chair getting interviewed, and I'm looking for something with more demonstration than talking. The other one, Survival for Law Enforcement (or something like that), got good reviews as far as content, but they said the poor quality of the audio and video overshadowed Ayoob's good teaching.

I've heard of Clint Smith but didn't look for anything by him. I'll also look at Cirillo's stuff. Thanks for the suggestions so far and keep 'em comin'.

There are several sources for videos.

I'd recommend only Gunsite or Thunder Ranch videos.

The thing is, It's kinda like learning to fly, skydive or scuba dive with just a video.

It's important to get some training with a good instructor. That way you get immediate feedback and safety reinforced. The videos are designed, typically for people to use after they have taken that class and want a source of refresher info.

That said, PLEASE make sure you are completely unloaded, not distracted and the ammo is in a separate room. There have been quite a few TV's shot up by people doing self-help firearms instruction.

I hope this has helped encourage you to get out there and get some training.
