The book lists ranges for the M serial numbers as:

Models 34, 35, 43, 51, 63:

1969 - 1971 M1 - M30000
1971 - 1973 M30001 - M60000

So your serial number of M53120 was likely built in 1973.

The blued Square Butt model with 3.5" barrel was by far the most common. Round butts and nickel finishes were much rarer. Some also came with a .22lr cylinder.

Welcome! It is a .22 Magnum Kit Gun and in the condition pictured is probably worth in the $650-700 range. The third side plate screw is under the right wood stock panel. A very nice gift from your grandfather!

Loved my grandpa! But all he could afford is a single shot 12ga H&R.Nice heritage you got there. And it seems to be in perfect condition.Take good care of it(like I do of my 12Ga H&R).
