I've always envied people that are talented with that. I'm pretty much comfortably unilingual though! I can manage Spanish a little but I understand and read it much better than speak it. Most of the romance languages I can sort of understand not hard once you get the hang of it.

If I watch the Godfather movies I can sort of understand the Italian but I did live in Italy for 4 years so that helps but I can't really do as well as in Spanish due to not having anyone to practice with.

I had a ethnic Russian Iranian neighbor that spoke like 7 languages including English, Spanish, Russian, Farsi, Arabic, Armenian and like one of the Pakistan languages.

Met another Russian that claimed she could do even more languages but she struggled with Spanish!

I'm a strong supporter of English as a unifying USA language but I see nothing wrong with learning another language after fleuency in ones countries mother tongue.

I lived in Shenzhen, PRC and Hong Kong for 5 years ... for the first 2 years I took intensive Mandarin lessons and am at a fairly conversational level and could communicate with my staff rather well.

I can't even pronounce most Cantonese....

I didn't think I could but my wife doesn't understand anything I say to her.

"Hey Lady, I only speak two languages. English and bad English!"

At one time or another I have been able to navigate and get food/drink in Portuguese, German, and Spanish (and Morse code if you want to count that). But like so many other things Use it or Loose it has taken its toll.

Ek praat Afrikaans!!

I can manage Welkom and Tot Siens. (Hello and Goodbye.)

If I recall correctly, Mooie Meisie (sp?) means pretty girl. Saw it in some book written by an Afrikaaner, probably by Stuart Cloete. I need to confirm that, as I want the hero of a book that I'm writing to say that to a South African chick he wants to impress.

Can you confirm, and is my spelling right?

Oh: I can read South African wine labels, as I can in several languages.

Thanks,

T-Star
P.S. I just remembered kloof, krans, and koppje. Valley, cliff, and a rocky hill. I hope...

And I'm on another, non-gun, board where the Euro members speak several languages. The embarrassing thing is that a Czech girl there uses English better than most Americans, and is a fine writer. And she apologizes for her poor English!

In high scool I didn't take Latin but I did have four years of pig.

Really, if I could speak a foreign language I would be illiterate in two languages...that would make me...uh, uh, bi-illiterate.

just sayin'
