Welcome to the forum.
I'd guess it's an in house proof mark of some sort.
Lots of guns have various kinds of markings on them.

I have owned one or two third generation pistols and one of the earlier 610 5" revolvers with that "U" there. I contacted S&W Customer Service who said the "U" indicated a used gun. They told me the guns would still be waranted as they had come out of the factory. The factory box end labels, serial numbered to the guns, also indicated "USED". They indicated the guns may have been used in the Armorer's School or as a sample,etc. I learned that one of mine had been exported to Euurope, then reimported to the U.S. at some time,for some reason. You never know what you'll find out sometimes by calling S&W Customer Service.

The "used gun" explanation is correct. Hope the gun wasn't sold as a new gun and you weren't charged for a new gun.

I got it used . I asked the shop were i got it they never saw that mark before. I got it for a good price, I brought a sigma9ve from them .Was there looking for some ammo and saw the m&p. It felt good the trigger felt great the price was good. I did not notice the u till after I got home and was cleaning the pistol and looking at it close.

hey you just gave me my nick name for the 9c the u-gun ,wait till my wife here's me ask if she want to shoot the u-gun at the range. LOL
