it wouldn't take too much to convert the M&P 22 to shoot the 5.7. It'd be cheaper than the FiveSeven lol

Maybe it's just me but I don't really understand all the hoopla over the 5.7. It's a pretty niche market. There are more powerful rounds available with proven track records. I don't really see Smith doing a 5.7 M&P before they do a 10mm or offer an M&P15 in .300 or 6.8 or 6.5 or .50 Beowulf or .458 Socom.

The cartridge was originally designed to penetrate soft body armor, which it does well with the original bullets that are unavailable to civilians. I guess if you like loud pistols that shoot expensive ammo.........

It's a wimpy round that does one thing well, penetrate soft body armor with the right ammo, and even then it will only be truly effective with a long enough barrel with as many rounds on target as possible (P90), and due to the fact civilians cannot get the fully auto P90 or the armor piercing ammo, it's essentially a useless, over priced, under powered cartridge.

I'll pass, but ymmv.

I voted No .. Over penetration would be an issue as most likely the bad guy won't be wearing body armor. A few months back a guy was telling a friend and I about a situation where the BG was high on drugs shot nine times and still came at the shooter whose FiveSeven sent rounds right through the guy, just pumping him with holes but not knocking him down.

Cross sectional density and ballistic coefficient play a larger role in overpenetration that velocity. The last thing I'd be worried about with a 5.7 is overpenetration, under penetration is more likely.

What would the ballistics of a 5.7 be out of a 4" pistol barrel? Similar to 22 WMR? Not enough to impress me into buying one.

I think because of bullet design, you'll get even less penetration with the 5.7. If you're shooting a skinny zombie with no clothes you might be ok, but shooting a heavily clothed monster of a human... Good luck, I'll pass.

"Kel-Tec have stated that a 40 grain .22 WMR round should reach a velocity of 1230 fps from the 4.3" barrel of their PMR-30 pistol. This works out to 134.40 ft/lbs of energy.

"This is a significantly less than the FN Five-seveN USG (4.75" barrel), which can push a 40 grain bullet at 2009 fps. This works out to 358.57 ft/lbs! Nearly three times as powerful as the .22 WMR! "

Are you speaking from experience or opinion?

My post was from a limited memory of a magazine article I read a while back, but I just did a brief internet search and I see many variations of results comparing 22 WMR and/or 22 Hornet and/or the 5.7, both in 10.5" and 4.5" and 6.5" barrel lengths. Not sure I would rely on much of what is found on the internet, and personally I do not have ANY experience with any of the above mentioned rounds. Perhaps the repeated redundancy of the internet causes folks to misquote when they copy and paste?

I am NOT disputing your information, as I said I have NO experience with these rounds in any firearm.

I did find your quote. I also found this comment about the 5.7 out of a 10.5" bbl:
40 grain Hornady V-Max bullet, load #SS197SR, claims a muzzle velocity of 1950 fps with 340 ft. lbs. of muzzle energy. (excerpt from a randomly selected internet article on 5.7 5.7x28mm "Cop Killer" Cartridge Myth )
which is similar to your findings from a 4.5" bbl.

I am happy with my several SD guns in [currently] 2 calibers - 357 and 45 - so a 5.7 would not be on my list, thus my "NO" vote. Perhaps with unlimited resources it could appear on my list someday, but it wouldn't be near the top.

I'll refrain from commenting further on this, there are certainly experienced folks with more valuable information for discussing the topic. Perhaps someone with a P90 and an FN and a chronograph could supply first-hand results?

Sorry so wordy, slow day... ;)

I own an FN 5.7 pistol, but not for the reasons you'd think.
First off its a dandy of a field cartridge and does a nice job on Tge local groundhog population, and if the shot presented itself I'd try it on a coyote too!
Thing is everybody wants to compare it too the rompin .45 or magnificent .357. What you don't understand here is how this wee bullet works. Its just like the ..223/5.56, whereas is tumbles after penetration, and it is the same as a .22 Mag...out of a RIFLE!
And not to be morbid, but it worked down at Fort Hood and the Secret Service does use it.
You might want to check out the videos over at Brassfetcher.com and see for yourself. I sure wouldn't want to get hit by it!
As for an M&P in it, I'll pass. Dale
