I think it is time for a lower back brace. One of those black wrap around things. I had lower back surgery years ago that helped but the back muscles just get twinged when I do yard work. There are so many out there, I don't need magnets or magic copper or crystals.;)

Do they really help??

They do help. When I worked the loading dock at a plumbing supply warehouse, I wore the kind with shoulder straps.
Shoveling snow? I'm wearing a back brace under my jacket.
It's either that or complaining about back pain for a week or more.
I do recommend that you wash it before wearing it for the first time.

While those braces do help and they do provide some lumbar support their biggest contribution is in restricting your ability to bend at the waist, forcing you to use your knees to lift.

I have something similar that I use for yard work, hiking, golf, etc. It helps stave off the tightness and provides needed support. Old age sucks ....

Those can be prevented if......................
you exercise and keep your muscles in shape.

It is true, that if you don't use it, you loose it.
The body/brain will let muscles just dwindle to nothing if not used.

I bought a high $$ exercise machine to get my body back into shape after my neck surgery.
Slowly I eased off my time build ups and started skipping my workout.
Three months later I started getting aches and pains in my body again and a sore back from just mowing the small back yard.

Just a walk around the back yard and up & down steps and two 5 lb. bar bells will help keep your muscle tone get back to where you should be able to do normal motions with minimal pain.

Exercise is needed at any age, no matter what you use.

Good luck.

I keep watching those workout videos with the hot women in spandex, but so far have not seen any results.:D

About every five years I twist something and I have severe sciatica - lower back pain that radiates down one leg. I have had about 50% success with a "walmart" type brace. The first time it was magic, the second time it didn't work very well and the third time it reduced but didn't eliminate the pain.
Normally I go to Urgent Care and get prescriptions for Hydrocodone, muscle relaxant and prednisione, and use the brace too.

However my pain is not chronic and only lasts for about two weeks.

I wore a back brace after rupturing my L5 S1 disc. The brace worked well to prevent additional injury and forced me to learn better back care habits.

I've never had surgery and rehabbed my back by following my physical therapist recommendations (trim your waistline to under 37 inches, do yoga cat-back and sway-back exercises or resistance training for abs and back).

The brace was no substitute for the physical therapy I received and my ongoing fitness program that includes lower back/abdominal machine workouts at the fitness club.

Been that route for a long ago before my lower back surgery. Now, around here you would have to have a limb hanging off you body by a tendon and they might give prescribe pain meds,
I just take Tylenol, occasionally a muscle relaxer but they make me nauseous,
Did more tree and hedge trimming today, I will suffer tomorrow!.

You mean you haven't gotten the phone call asking you if you have joint pain in your back, knees, or elbow? I'm sure they could help you out. I get that call at least once a week/

I've always heard that these help in the short term, but over time you come to depend on it and it can actually do more harm than good. Core exercises like crunches and sit ups are better for you. It's worked for me, anyway..

Check with your doc.
I've heard good and bad, muscles become dependent and atrophy, wore one once and was uncomfortable, good technique while lifting, bending is essential but if you're holding a hedge trimmer at shoulder height technique is out the window.

Good Luck from one with intermittent back problems ever since getting smacked by a car in '75.
