I've been watching some YouTube clips of SHTF and Doomsday Preppers a lot lately, especially at night since I have a hard time sleeping. What do you guys think about this stuff? I'm not trying to start a forum war... just do you guys believe in this stuff? Do you yourself prep. for "Doomsday"?

Personally I know on guns/ammo I'm prepared for a long time. Food wise, I have about 10 MRE's that I purchased from a MP last year.

Anyhow, just curious... this kinda stuff gets me thinking, sometimes too much.

People that more or less live in out of the way places should prepare to do for themselves.

Storms and things can leave you without electricity (some have generators or windmills).

Floods could cut you off from going for food, so having some food that keeps helps you out of this problem.

The REALITY SHOWS are very cheap for television to produce and produce revenue.

The real world of SHTF, Thermonuclear War, you probably wouldn't want to be too stocked up and live too long in the aftermath.

Reality of a major event would probably have the SHTF proposition causing the greatest problems in NYC, Washington D.C., Chicago, or L.A.

I wouldn't by choice live in any of those cities to begin with, many have and finally decided to move.

The TV PREPPERS are VERY EXTREME or the TV folks couldn't sell the concept to advertisers.

Maybe you should try COUNTING SHEEP and having a WARM GLASS OF MILK to go to sleep at nights

instead of watching foolish TV, you might just try reading a good book also.

Good Luck with your choices:)

There was a lot of this doomsday stuff back in the 70s and 80s and prior to that we were waiting for the russians to nuke us.I suspect I'll die from old age.Keep in mind that the fear mongers always have something to sell.Watching that stuff really wont help insomnia!

Yummy. Three days of stolen dubious MREs of unknown vintage... Go to the grocers and stock up on canned stew, chili, sardines, peaches etc and some corn meal for making mush ala Johnny Reb.

Anyone with access to the commissary can buy fresh MREs that are current production. Commercial substitues also can be had all over the place though quality varies on these.

Stockpiling weapons is a rather soothing hobby but in short order collecting canned meat is also amusing.

Yes and no. Im not anticipating Mt. St Helens to erupt any second nor am i scanning the skies for Chinese paratroopers but im trying to prepare for more simple stuff. Severe weather and extended power outages. None perishable food, extra blankets, small propane cooker things that are sold at Wally world that can boil water, flashlights, batteries, duct tape, first aid (something more then a box of bandaids. Gauze pads, tape, elastic wraps, rubbing alcohol, peroxide etc etc) a go bag or two just in case there is an evacuation and of course SD.

Gotta be prepared, knowledgeable resourceful common sense a good pair of boots made for walking and a must, Owning a McGyver Knife.

I tried to watch that prepper show and just can't, too silly for the most part.
I did kinda think about keeping a list of what they had and where they were located if SHTF. All I have stockpiled is guns and ammo:)

I have only watched a couple of shows. It makes me wonder why anyone with any common sense would go on National TV and show the World what they have, where it is located, and how they plan to use it....especially the guy that had one wall in a storage container filled with ammo from floor to ceiling. I am sure their neighbors know who they are. On another show a guy showed how secure his storage container was by shooting a rifle round into it....the bullet didn't penetrate the steel wall so he figured he was safe. The weapon was a .22LR.....go figure!

It is always a good idea to have a few of the basics put away for a "Just in case" situation, but the details are my business and not to be shared with the World. I'm not paranoid, just cautious.

I don't consider my selp a prepper, and I'm certainly not a dooms dayer.

But we have a lot of fires in this area and every so often we're told to get out.

I have a horse trailer with living quarters (totally self contained) and I keep it stocked up for when the fire fighters ask us to leave.

All I have to do is load up my two horses and dogs, throw some important stuff in the trailer or wife's exployer and head for town.

The fair ground is set up for this. The fair grounds people are waiting for us, pointing out which stall for the horses, where to park so we can hook up to the electricty.

My granddaughter has friends into jr rodeos and the give us hay.

So we have a nice little village of evacuatees, we just set back, fire up the grills and wait it out.

If we get snowed in, I have tractors big enough to dig me out. I have two generators incase we loose power. I've got a wood stove and plenty of wood.

Again, I wouldnt say I was a prepper, but in my old age I like my comforts and it don't take much to be ready.

I watched one episode the first time few weeks ago. Stuff there is really controversial I must say...

One guy - that was actually pretty interesting - said that antibiotics are the same for humans and animals. Therefore he's buying them in the pet store and using them for the family. One way to get it w/o prescription...

But then, in the same episode was an actual Doctor who buys medication in bulk. His wife doesn't like it and said that he spent $15k so far... but most medicine was already expired.

Bottom line: I watched ~45min but won't watch it again.

Too much hype only makes you crazy. And honestly, I don't wanna live forever...

Lee in Quartzsite's got a good point.

Remember Y2K? Computers were going to reset to 1900, everything would stop, airplanes were going to fall out of the sky. And people were preparing.

I know a guy that said he was prepared. He had a rifle and the local LDS church directory.

I don't know if the Mormans require it, but they certainly strongly suggest that each member keep a year's supply of food. So this guy's plan, if the world went to hell, was just go to the next address on his list, kill the guy living there and take his stuff.

There are people out there with that plan. So why in the world would anyone tell folks that:
a - they prepare
b - how much they have
and
c -where they are located

Preparation doesn't really cost that much if done over a period of time. You must have food, water, medications, some medical knowledge,etc.,etc. in case society gets turned on it's ear for a while. I expect we will be seeing episodes of exactly that, and in fact are already seeing it.
Some things on the shows are smart, but some of it is ridiculous. I see voluminous amounts of guns stacked in these homes or shelters, but have any of these people really prepared by seeking out the best training they can afford? I seriously doubt it. The firearms aspects are important but actually rank toward the bottom of the list for pure survival.
If it truly is a "doomsday" scenario and not just social disorder, then the official doomsday preppers guide is the Holy Bible,King James version.
For protection of the family during a crises then hardening your barriers is smart. We are staying with Colt carbines and Glock 17's for any serious stuff. That would be 8 adults, gathering here, all identically armed, plenty of supplies, adequate to advanced in training, and all with nasty attitudes.

You can laugh at the shows and in some cases its justified - but if you pay attention you just might learn something. The wife and I enjoy them if nothing more than for laughs but we usually learn a little something.

I've been watching some YouTube clips of SHTF and Doomsday Preppers a lot lately, especially at night since I have a hard time sleeping.

Stop worrying about all this ****, and you'll start sleeping better. The fear mongers are having their way with peoples wallets!

Even if you store a little at a time it's worth it. Water is essential. Better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it

The show was a joke and I wonder if it was not the design of some leftist idiot to discredit those who take some common sense measures.

Civil unrest, wholesale power grid failure, a dirty bomb shutting down gas refineries for a while are possible. I plan for possibility not probability. So does anyone else who carries a CCW, no one leaves the house that day planning to use their gun that day, if they did, they would stay home. You carry it just in case, reasonable sane people prepare in a reasonable way, not going overboard, but in common sense ways. The nuts on TV are neither reasonable nor sane IMO. JMO

Hey, I'm now a Prepper!!! OK, not exactly. But last weekend I did buy a case of MREs. No, I'm not planning on eating that "stuff". But my grand daughter asked me to buy her some army food. So in my never ending task of spoiling her rotten, I picked up a case. I would have only bought a couple of meals, but the individual meals were terrible menus, and they wanted $8 each for those (and no way to tell how old.) So I compromised and bought a full case made last year. She's already tried the first one and thought it was good. So next time she visits, she gets another. No, I guess I'm not prepping. I'm a spoiler. Just as good.

On the next meal she's got to sit still and learn to use the heater. This is all important stuff for a 6 YO. I'm guessing we can't send her to school with an MRE as a packed lunch. Liberal teachers might panic. Just the heater would be classed as an explosive device in PC schools.
