Picked up a half doen plus combat stocks today and there was this set of N frames that had no visible finish on the wood and the circle inserts were a dull stainless as opposed to the normal shiny stainless. Just hit me as odd. Any significance to the lack of finish and or dull inserts?

Looks like somebody started a 'refinish' project and didn't finish the project. I strip, on some grips, the original coating prior to hand sanding all the sharp edges. Some I apply a non-glossy coating or sometimes I leave the wood bare and then the bare wood, through handling, attains a satin finish.

I don't believe it. They came with about eight sets of stocks that were NOS condition and there was a S&W factory connection.

I thought the inserts were unusual as well, being a satin or matte finish verses shiny. Maybe I just haven't noticed the matte finished inserts before.

Anyway, the stocks are getting the lacquer treatment as we speak. I see why the factory used lacquer however I don't spray the medallions, so they shouldn't yellow with age.

The finish looks a bit odd, texture-wise.

I have a couple of the factory satin finish combat grips, and they appear a bit more smooth.

I wonder if some environmental exposure or cleaning solution may have slightly changed the finish?

My guess is the dull finish on the washers is just from the finish of the sheet from which they were punched, and it's just a coincidence that they were mounted on those grips.

Beyond that, everyone else here is more expert than I regarding why the wood might have that finish, assuming that's the way they left the factory, which I don't doubt.
