I'm in the process of rescuing some stuff from my late father-in-law's junk before the wife tosses it. I found an envelope full of old stamps ranging from 1 cent and up. Most of them have been cancelled so I'm sure he took them from old letters. Are they worth keeping and finding out if they are worth anything? I'm sure some of them are from the 50's or so. There may even be a few from WWII era.

It all depends if they are rare or not. Cancelled stamps are not worth as much as non-cancelled stamps. But they are a neat piece of history. Any hobby store or book store will have a basic stamp collector book to see if you have any rare ones.

I have a small collection of old stamps, they are neat.

Can't help cause I'm in the same boat. Have all my Dads collections from the 20's, 30's-40's a lot of European and US in books. Prolly outta take them to a dealer who will take me for the lot.

"Most" stamps aren't worth any thing.

You can get a book of stamp values and go through it. Back in the 1950's I was stationed in Europe and got into stamp collecting just to kill time. Bought and collected thousands of them and the whole lot isn't worth more than a hundred or so dollars today.

Maybe someday I'll find some kid who needs a hobby!!

If you want to get rid of them find a local Boy Scout troop. We still have a Stamp Collecting merit badge and there are some kids who will collect them. If you cant find someone who will take them then just PM me and I will find one of my Scouts to take them off your hands.

I also need to get in gear and find out about my father's collection. Have about ten full books...most are blocks and full sheets of stamps from the 1930's and 1940's.

If all else fails, there is a "Stamps for the wounded" out of Arlington, VA. The man who runs it provides them to men in the hospitals. Google the address.
As to mint blocks and sheets, they are worth about 80-90% of face value. Check out e-bay, completed items, for latest prices.

Sounds VALUABLE to me

Sounds VALUABLE to me. Sounds like the are uncanceled.

An offer of face value would me like offering $5 for a $5 gold piece.
