Any Thoughts on the 4053?

Hi all,

I have a chance to get a 4053. It looks like it would be a good "traveling" pistol. With a round chambered and DAO, it seems it would be quick and easy to use.

It is .40 cal, which I have never owned and know nothing about, except I have heard remarks that the cartridge is like an emasculated 10mm.

What are your thoughts on the 4053 and .40-cal round? It would likely be a glove box gun for when I travel.

As always, thanks for your advice.

The 4053 will be an excellent duty/vehicle/SD gun. You will have to get used to the DAO trigger if you normally shoot SA semi-autos, but once you do, you will really enjoy shooting it. The 40XX series pistols are reliable and accurate.

Now, 40 S&W, as a caliber is a compromise. As long as you can live with that, it won't be a problem. I use Winchester Rangers as my SD load for my 40 cals and find the combination of weight and velocity to be a good mix for what the average person will run into. Of course, in the interest of disclosure, I am one of those people who believes that any caliber 38 SPL or better will serve the average person well for SD. If you have never shot a 40 before try renting or borrowing a gun of a similar weight to the 4053 and see how you like it. Some people think the caliber has too much kick, others don't see a problem with it. The only way to know is to shoot it yourself.

If you do decide to get it, you will have a fine firearm to enjoy and defend yourself with.

.40 isn't awful

The .40 gets a worse rap than it deserves...

It isn't a 10mm, a .45 or a 9mm -- but in the right load, it works just dandy...

Like it or not, some stats show it can be a top stopper -- with the right load...

(Of course, some guys on here are going to have an aneurysm over the fact that I said this. But I can promise you, they won't volunteer to get shot by a .40 -- ANY .40...)

It's not my favorite round -- and I hate the fact that it stunted the 10mm's growth and acceptance -- but at the same time, I can see why it did catch on.

It started out as an "Short and Weak" 10mm -- but it has come into its own -- like it or not.

I'd buy a 4053 in a heart-beat -- and would carry it -- although I'd much prefer a 1053 -- if one existed.

The S&W DAO trigger CAN be tuned to an astounding sweetness and smoothness. I prefer S&W DAOs to the traditional DA/SAs -- partly because of how much the clean slide and hammer aid in snag-proofing the pistol.

4053 is Great. lwt. no external safty levers.

Like a 9 shot 40 cal. revolver.

They are absolutely great weapons. I always preferred the 3913 and 4013 over the DAO's, but the 4053tsw showed me that they
have a place in my collection. After swapping my hammer spring out for a 17lb Wolf, I lightly polished the hammer. Lots of dry firing, and several hundred rounds down range has earned it a place as my house gun. I use the 135gr Corbon round.

I had a 4053. It went bang EVERY time I pulled the trigger.I bought it new and ran @ 3000 flawless rounds through it before I sold it. You won't be disappointed .

I own a 4053 and I control it better than my snappy Glock 22. The 4053 is my current CCW. Bull's-eye from 15 yds every time with a 165gr Federal round.

I own a 4053 single stack and is a wonderful handgun. The DAO was strange at first, but I learn quickly. I love the cal enough that I bought a NIB 4014 and since has LNIB. Great guns!

Outrider,

I have a 4053 that I like, and I'm curious about your statement about tuning the DAO trigger.
Would the pistol have to be returned to S&W for that, or is this something that any competent gunsmith can do?

RicT,

Lighter springs, some light stoning should do the trick.

Still, I'm not a gunsmith -- and have found the DAOs to be either extremely good -- or extremely bad.

It appears the springs are the primary culprit.

It might be best to start another thread and ask who does the best trigger work on 4053s and other 3rd Gen DAOs.
