I figured a hatchet thread belongs in the knives forum but please move if it doesn't ….

I only have a few including an old Marbles (Gladstone MI) and this Western (Boulder CO). I believe it's from the 40's or 50's, please correct me if that's wrong. I'm impressed with the condition of the leather handle.

Here's a few more.

The one on the back left with the square hole is a Bell Telephone lineman's axe.

Here's a Western similar to yours, but it's marked "Western - Boulder, Colo. USA". The small one in the middle is a "sounding axe" used by foresters to check the condition of trees and the one on the right is a Case XX. The sheath under the Western is an Estwing and not original.

I've got a few - but don't in anyway consider myself a collector. I just happen to have accumulated a few - lol. An unused Marbles Safety Axe, a WWll era hatchet and a few commercial versions. I just gave one of the commercial Hatchets to a good friend yesterday! I must have my Boy Scout hatchet around somewhere but have not seen it lately.

The only old vintage hatchet I have is my Great Grandfathers carpenters (hewing) hatchet. He was a carpenter / barn builder and used it on beams. I finally re-handled it last year (set up for right hand use). It is a very early Craftsman.

I have a hewing hatchet that I received from my dad many years ago. On my list to clean all the rust off, possibly install a new handle. Will know when I get the rust off the head. When we moved from NY to Louisiana 26 years back I found a Eastwing hatchet. Being outside in a shed and had suffered from wind and rain. Covered in rust, was a bear to get cleaned of rust.Did take a great edge and spray painted the head red so as to be able to find it in the tall grass. lastky a bunch of commercial axes by sears and some are unidetifiable picked up here and there. Frank

Now with picture

Have an old BSA hatchet. Will get a picture posted when I can.

Has been well used and probably abused.

On a related note ….. suppose you find one that is especially dirty, stained or rusted. What may be the best way(s) to clean one without sanding on it or making it look restored.

Those are pretty neat. Be something I'll look for now when I visit the local treasure places.

As mentioned, I have an affinity for vintage Marble's / Gladstone MI products. I've been watching this No 5 for a bit now and just had to have it.

Guessing it was the original owner that etched his/her name and the date "1930" into the safety arm adding to the unique character. Also adding to the interest for me is the beautiful original paint still looking good.

Anyway, thanks to all for sharing in this thread, here's the new addition ….

Have an old Keen Kutter I found in the "chicken house" that appears unused. (By examining the edge&poll) had to have it re- hafted. At the same time also found what appears to be a pre- 1900's blacksmith axe tha is made of wraught iron w/a steel cutting edge welded in. Had it re-hafted at the same time
