My wife ordered me an Amazon Kindle for Christmas. It finally got here this week, and it is now a Kindle 2.

So far, I love it. It's just the right size, and I like the e-ink display. It's just as advertised, it's close enough to a book to be good enough. As Jeff Bezos claims, it "disappears". What he means is that you forget about the device, and just move into the world of the book. That's what happens for me.

On the down side, it's terrible for maps and diagrams, and not that good for pictures. But for me, these are minor problems. I read lots of books that are just text. My house is full of them.

It's going to be real nice for reading material on those long plane flights on my upcoming trip to the Orient.

Wife bought herself a Kindle 2. It didn't work but their tech support sent her a new one. She says she likes but I haven't noticed her using it much yet. She said it took a long time to download a book so maybe we don't get good signal here. To me they seem like a good idea and I have to think one day books will be replaced by something like this. But first they really need to improve the display for pictures, maps, colors, etc. IMO.

I'm waiting for the color version... Playboy just doesn't look right in grayscale

I got one for my GF about six months ago. She didn't like it and I decided to play around with it before sending it back. I was hooked.

They are great for someone who reads a lot -- especially if they travel. You can carry thousands of books with you. I'm a Charles Dickens freak and have all of his novels on mine; same with Mark Twain.

My technician and I were talking about Patricia Cornwell's new novel, Scarpetta a couple of weeks ago and decided that we both wanted to read it. I downloaded it in about 10 seconds and handed her the Kindle.

Mine is the first version. It has some issues that have been taken care of in the Kindle 2.

It's great to seal it up in a plastic bag then sit in the bath tub and read -- even better with water in the tub.
