I was dry firing my Sigma today and the striker, where it sticks up and the sear pulls it back snapped off. I have not heard of this happening before. I'll send it back tomorrow and lucky for me I have a new one coming tomorrow. I have a lot of dry firing and 1200 down the pipe. May be I should ease up on the dry firing.

I know I'll collect a lot of chaff off of this, but? So what?
I have not in the past, nor do I in the present, nor will I ever plan on in the future, dry firing any weapon regardless of it's type of ignition system without at least a spent cartridge in it.
OK, I await the slings and arrows...

Search broken strikers on this forum. There have been a few.

I bought a Sigma .40 cal when they first came out, back in 1999, and I hadnt even put 150 rounds down the pipe and the firing pin broke right in two. I took it back to where I bought it from and they shipped it to S&W and a week later I got my pistol back, and in working order. Before I sold it, it had more than 5000 rounds through it, most of them reloads, and never had another problem out of it.

12,000 plus rounds on my current sigma and i've dry fired it hundreds, if not thousands of times. Things break every now and then. Replace it or get it replaced and keep shooting.

you can call S&W and they will ship you the part for you to install. saves time. when my recoil rod and spring was damaged for my sigma they had me one out ina few days..

S&W says you can dryfire centerfire autos without anything in the chamber IIRC, but I'm generally with you on this one. I like to use snap caps when dry firing my M&P. I've dry fired it a few times with nothing in it, but I prefer to use snap caps.

I emailed S&W to ask about dry firing a M&P 9 as I had been told by a S&W armorer not to do so as it could break the striker ( the manual says it is ok to dry fire ). S&W told me that " excessive dry firing " could cause the striker to break. I have dry fired all my other striker fired pistols and never had a problem but have stoped dry firing the M&P.

Is that the same as 'stuff happens'?

I spoke to Frank at LSG this morning and he said dry firing is fine. The S&W web site also says it's OK in FAQ.

Yeah,
The folks that designed and built them always know best, they're the ones honoring the warranty after all?
I only bring paranoia about highly tempered parts bashing into one another to the discussion.
My horoscope in the newspaper is seldom as optimistic as I'd like as well!

Sigma Dry Firing

I also have a Sigma SW9VE and I dry fire it alot to loosen up the trigger pull. I have heard that you always should use a spent shell or snap caps do avoid the problem of the striker breaking. I always use snap caps to be on the safe side. No problems as of yet. Good luck...
