Anybody know metal detectors?

Thanks for all your help here. It was helpful. I have placed an order with Kellyco during their Christmas sale. I ended up with the Garret At Pro. They threw in a pile of accessories and a free pinpointer. Should be everything I need to get started and then some. They even had a BOGO sale where I was able to get an additional BH Tracker IV for only $62. Figure I'll re-gift that one to a family with kids.
Selling off an unused Glock to finance so it should be a winner all around.

The tracker 4 is a good machine for the money, I had a White and I bought a tracker 4 for my Lil Buddy to use, I gave the White to a friend and use the tracker all the time, no bells and whistles, you just go buy the tone and it's good for doing the beaches.

Yes, that Tracker IV is a great unit. I keep one in my vehicle year round, just to have, if I spot an interesting area to stop and detect for a half hour or so. At the price you can get them, if one gets stolen from the car, it's no big deal!

I used to go with my dad and grandfather all of the time. They used whites. They used headphones and were good enough to tell whether they were digging for dimes, nickles, quarters, or a pop tab, and about how deep it was. They both found some nice rings and even helped people find lost jewelry in their yard.

If I were to get in to it, I would go with White's. My brother has plans on dusting off Dad's this summer and learning how to use it.

They have been making the tracker 4 for many years.

Yes, a quality electronic pointer is a great tool to have. They can be pricey, but well worth the expense. I have used several costing from about $60 to about $150. I hate to say it but the cheaper ones do not work that well. I find the biggest problem to be with sound volume and the vibration features. I eventually settled with a Garrett Pro Pointer.

You will also need a good strong digging tool. Do not carry a shovel a round, as it will quickly get you thrown out of many areas. My preferred digging tools are inexpensive bayonet knock offs, which are strong and cheap, about $20 for a good one, with a 5" or 6" blade.

I especially appreciate the advice on not carrying a shovel. I never thought about it but I could easily imagine a land owner getting excited at the sight of a shovel. I would (as I'd envision divots and ankle twisting holes all over my property.) A small belt mounted digging tool would be less threatening. I've got Garrets digging tool incoming as part of the package.
