All my life I have gone to bed and laid there for an hour or more before I get to sleep. I am kept alive by coffee, but I cut out caffeine by about noon. I take Melatonin and Dyphenhydramine every night, but I read that will lead to dementia. Missus Fan says I am already suffering from that. I want a natural sleep aid. I never go to doctors so I don't want a prescription.
I am almost 50 and in perfect health. Any ideas?

I would find a sleep specialist and have a sleep study done to see if there are underlying issues......messing with your sleep should not be left to amateurs like us.

Cut out all electronics at least an hour before bed.. no tv, no radio, no phone and no computer.. You've already cut out caffeine, etc.. Read a book if needed to wind down and that'll help. This was what a Dr. told me......

If that doesn't help...

Melatonin. Lavender.

Beware of vivid melatonin dreams.

Yeah, I know. When I first started taking it it was cool. Like going to an action movie every night. I recommended it to a friend of mine once. I warned her about that. The next time I saw her she about throttled me. Said they were so scary she almost called me in the middle of the night to holler at me.
I've been taking Melatonin for over 10 years now. It doesn't have that effect anymore. Actually it doesn't help you get to sleep, but it helps you STAY asleep.

I've had the same problem all my life, if I want to fall asleep fast a few shot's of Jack usually helps.:)

You need to get rid of stress. You know, work, clients, wimmin [emoji1]

If you have a suggestion for that let me know. I have been married for almost 26 years, to a Woman who is going through menopause. Have been self-employed almost 30 years. Have to deal with clients, employees and our wonderful government. My cell can, and does, ring 24 hours a day.:(
Stress is my daily companion. I have heard stress is a killer. I have proof that's not true.....I have a pulse.

All these artificial sleep aids are garbage.. they may help initially, but when your body gets used to them, then what? Like I said in my prior post... it does work. You have to train your body and get out of bad habits.

I suffer from tinnitus and have a tough time getting to sleep. My audiologist recommended a noise machine to help over-ride the noise of my tinnitus and I bought one from Amazon for about 30 bucks. I was taking a natural sleep aid called Somnapure that I bought over the counter at Walmart that seemed to help. Since using the machine I can get right to sleep without taking any sleep aids. It will run continuous or for timed settings of 15, 30 or 60 minutes. I usually set it for 60 minutes and am out light a light.

If you are really in "perfect health" you really want to avoid a magic pill approach. I was going to mention or elude to something but then you mentioned menopause...

Perhaps a good long walk or some form of exercise that makes you physically tired. Sounds like you are mentally tired.

A doctor might recommend a sleep study based on some further questions he might ask you too. I hated going to the doctor too but that caught up to me in a big way. At 50 you might want to rethink that but that is up to you and I don't want to add to your stress.:)

Stress might not kill you outright but it definitely can wear on you and diminish your quality of life over the course of time.

I don't really think my age or stress is the cause. I have had this problem all my life. Even when I was a kid it took me forever to go to sleep.
I got it from my Mom.
