Anyone actually use a Randall Knife

I've always had a weakness for quality tools that feel good in the hand....a Randall knife qualifies well on both those accounts. I've managed to acquire a few of them over the years. Like a classic Smith & Wesson revolver, an old Colt single action, or a vintage Winchester rifle.....Owning a Randall is owning a piece of history.


Thankfully, I have no direct need for a "fighting knife", but I have been known to toss my Model 1-7 on my side when the road travels to unfavorable places. The light weight, balance, fast handling of that blade is amazing.

The "Combat Companion" has become my general utility / camp knife these days. It's an easy size and weight to have on the belt, and it's quite a handy "one size fits all" kind of blade.

I picked up a Model 15 for heavier tasks that would be better served by a thicker, more robust blade profile. It's a bigger blade that I notice more on my belt, but it's tough as nails.

Last, but certainly not the least is the super sharp, ultra lightweight TriAthlete that lives in my boot. It's my "everywhere" knife.

My newest Randall was delivered this week.

It's a 7" Model 5 with green Micarta Border Patrol handle, thong hole, red,white and blue spacers and a single guard. 01 steel. Type 'C' sheath with stone.

Ordered in May 2015, and forgotten.

It will get used.

Visited Randall’s shop in Orlando about 35 years ago. Drooled over the knives but with house/car payments, kids to raise and all the usual bills a Randall wasn’t in the cards.
Christmas came that year and Santa left a small box under the tree with my name on it.
Although I no longer hunt I still have it.
As you can see, it was no safe queen and dressed out a bunch of deer, ducks, geese and fish.

Have a few. Previously owned a Model 5 I used quite often. Great knife for BBQ catering.

Owners of older Randalls, and especially those from the Vietnam War era, might be surprised at how valuable they have become. I ordered a Model 14 in 1963 and basically kept it unused until last year when I mentioned it to a collector. I had originally paid $40 for the knife, an astronomical sum at the time, and the collector offered me $1550! Since it had no sentimental value, he became the proud new owner.

The price he paid you is what you had in it, adjusted for inflation.
Maybe a little less.

I bought a Randall Made Knife, and used it. It looks pretty, but I am not impressed with it as a knife. It will not take or hold much of an edge. The edge warps under normal cutting chores. It is really quite a poor excuse for a knife.

My Cutco knives perform far better than my Randall.

I am sorry that I bought the Randall, but I wanted to see what all the hype is. It is just that, hype. I will not be buying an more Randall knives.

IMHO, there is nothing superior about a Randall knife.

My best friend has had a couple of Randalls for 40 years, and while they are somewhat interesting knives, I have never wanted one either.
Many other brands will perform various chores as well or better, at a fraction of the price. And if lost or stolen, is not the catastrophe that losing a knife costing hundreds of dollars would be.

My old sergeant-major cut his way out of a Bell H-13 with his Randall 15 when he was a young SSG. His lieutenant crashlanded in a creek and the Bell rolled. SSG Weber cut their seat belts, then cut through the bubble. They were rescued, and when they landed at Bien Hoa the LT started walking back towards the flight line to get another helicopter. "LT, you're wounded and I can't turn my head." The LT was hit three times and SSG Weber had a broken neck. That was the third H-13 they'd wrecked that day.

At least that's what I heard.

Well I kinda screwed myself on a 10-5. It's an early one from about 1964. Got over anxious on an auction and probably paid twice what I should have but what the heck, it will be a good kitchen knife.

I haven't used my model # 10 (rosewood) in quite a few years since I don't go fishing anymore. I have had it for over 30 years. since the knife isn't forged Randall said that it only take a couple of months to get it and they were right. I don't remember what I paid for it but I don't think it was much more that $125 or so

A few years ago I was at an auction in a small Kansas town.
I spied a Randall (not sure which model) in a box. I waited until the knife came up for sale. Me and 1 other fella were biding. I had about $104 in my pocket. At $105 I was out and the other fella got it.

I could just scream!

I wonder if anyone has a similar fighter? Predecessor of the current #4-6F. I saw this photo once on a German forum in 2011 and on some other forum, and then I didn’t see it again. Blade about 8 inches
