I like shoulder holsters for field carry. It keeps gun out of the way of my long gun, tools, axes, fishing poles, etc..
However, I've not found a shoulder holster for a 3" J-frame. And do you prefer vertical or horizontal carry? I DON'T like inverted, because I feel like the barrel would be pointing towards my armpit and that makes me a bit uneasy.

I have several Bianchi 9R inverted shoulder rigs which I understand you don't like. I only bring this up because both of the three inch mods. fit BOTH a 3" mod. 60 and a 2&1/2" model 66. I'm not sure that a verticle holster w/o a retainer spring would offer the same versatility but it wouldn't hurt to ask some makers. As a retired Army Armor Officer and a helicopter pilot I am very fond of the M-3 and M-7 shoulder/chest holster design ["Tanker"holster] for field use. El Paso Saddlery makes a very fine version called the 1942 they advertise it as "available for single actions, double actions and semi autos from 3" to 8 &3/8ths". I can't qoute a price because my catalog is old but you can google El Paso Saddlery - Holsters. Hope this is helpful. Nick

I bought a vintage (Mississippi marked-- early 1960's?) Berns-Martin Lightnin' upside-down shoulder holster for the 2" j-frame from a fellow forum member a while back. While I don't mind the muzzle in the armpit thing, it is a bit of a reach to draw the gun. The shoulder holster I really wanted (and still so) is the Bianchi #209 "silent partner". The #209 & the similar #208 "silent partner 2" split the difference between upside-down & horizontal by carrying the gun in a 45 degree inverted position, & retain it by using a trigger guard pocket & an elastic closure. The only thing the gun is pointed at is the tall guy behind you.
BTW anybody have a 2" j-frame #209 they wanna trade for a Lightnin'?

I have used my shoulder holster for my Chief's exactly 3 short times. It's for a 2" barrel but I am not a fan of shoulder holsters. If you would like to own it, please PM me and I'll give you a more specific description.
