When I was a kid my Dad got injured and was out of work. One of our poor folks meals was neck bones and sauerkraut. I'll pass on it now, TYVM.

What's with the Krauts?.My wife insists I have a spoon full of black eyed peas for New Year.Yuck.I'm not into their brand of music.

Confused? Have another. :p :D

Sauerkraut and bratwurst... it's not just for New Years anymore. 20 years in Central Ohio got me very used to those two along with mac'n'cheese, red slaw, German hot potato salad, knackwurst, and creme puffs, especially at Schmidt's.

I didn't know it was for new years, usually eat it at least twice weakly, course I'm 1/2 german, 1/2 irish. Also enjoy bananas and miracle whip!

German potato salad!! Just reading it makes me shudder.
Smells like the alley behind a skid row tavern.

Pork chops, slow cooked on a bed of sauerkraut and cabbage, served with black eyed peas, smashed taters and kreatopita, a Greek meat pie.

I'm expecting pork chops 'n' kraut for supper today.

I wasn't raised eating blackeyed peas, but I'm slowly coming around.

Don't stand between me and a plate of pinto beans and cornbread though. :D

Pork Butt and Kraut finishing up now in the Crock-Pot. I'll add diced chunks of Yukon Gold potato shortly.

Hey Grandpa, what's for supper? Pork loin in the crock pot covered with kraut at 3 am this morning. About an hour before lunch time we'll lay some hot links on top for an hour and then they will melt in your mouth. Around 5 pm the loin and the kruat will be perfect. Yum Yum!

Reckon we're a day late, as neighbor just invited the lady and me for New Year's Day dinner of sauerkraut and pork. Her last name sounds German or Dutch, so this might be good! Plus she ran a restaurant!

Regards,

Dyson

That's what we eat on New Years Day. Just sampled some of the greens! :D We call the peas and rice "Hoppin' John." Always drop a dime in them for good luck. Nobody has broke a tooth yet!

Have Pa Dutch style pork and kraut every New Years Day. Cooking as this is being typed. Being decended from the River Brethern, can actually get away with saying that.

Simple receipe

Ingredients

4.5 lb pork sirloin roast
2 32 oz containers Kraut (fresh is better)
1 apple, cut into eigths
1 onion, quartered
glass roaster that has about 2 inches around the roast

Procedure

Liberally pepper pork, roast at 350 uncovered appr 2 hours or untill done

rinse kraut, put in same roasting pan as pork. Fill with water till pork almost covered, add apple and onion. Cover and cook at 350 about 1.5 hour.

Get out pork and de-bone. Put pork back into roaster and cook uncovered at 350 about 1 hour, adding water if necessary

If any leftovers after couple days, get some hot dogs and boil in left over juice and kraut. Put on roll and add mustard.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Something different this year..........

Prime Rib.:)
