Anyone ever have a RH thread extractor screw come unthreaded?

They changed the extractor screws to a LH thread in the early 1960s, but I've never talked to anyone who had this problem in practice.

yup....locks up tight

My 1955-56 Highway Patrolman did that very thing....I just stuck a pencil behind the hammer and rotated the cylinder while holding the ejector rod until it was back in enough to allow me to open the cylinder and tighten it properly. Not hard to fix, but certainly troublesome enough that S&W changed the thread direction.

Back "In the Day", all the time. That's why they changed it to a left-handed thread.

In theory a left-handed thread in this location tends to tighten as it rotates. In practice "It 'taint necessarily so". Since it tends to tighten with normal cylinder rotation the left-handed extractor rod is easier to screw back in if it backs out enough to make the cylinder difficult to open.
 
YUP!

I have had both L/H AND R/H come loose. When they do, I use that opportunity to fully unscrew them and take all the parts out, clean the threads and springs with Remoil, clean the inside of the cylinder hole, and reassemble. I have not found the need to use any type of thread locker, just put a piece of leather around the ejector rod before using a pair of pliers to tighten everything up. VERY IMPORTANT!!! MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EMPTY CARTRIDGES IN THE CHAMBERS WHILE TIGHTENING EVERYTHING UP. This will keep everything aligned under the pressure of tightening. Don't "Gorilla tighten" it, just a bit past snug will do.
