Recently I've been prowling the online auctions for a pre-27 to upgrade my well used but not abused 1955 version without the original grips.

I was able to snag a 1952 version with original grips, mild hoster wear and a turn line indicative of some but very little firing.

In my search, however, I spotted plenty of ANIB, LNIB, and allegedly unfired outside of the factory Pythons, but I saw no like new 5" pre-27's.

My educated guess is that virtually every 5" blue pre-27 was bought to be used, either as a duty pistol or some other appropriate use. In the case of my recent acquisition it was purchased and carried in the woods as protection from Mr. Bear during deer hunting.

Anyone ever see a like new 5" pre-27?

I have seen several that are as new in numbered gold box with tools, etc. I have one that belonged to my father-in-law. They are becoming harder to find and quite pricy in that condition.

5" pre-27

S81180 Beautiful with excellent original Gold box, black knurled SAT, tools, S&W letter shipped November 30, 1950 to Gopher Shooters supply in Fairbault, MN. I sold it a few months ago after being its caretaker for a number of years.

I got the gun at a gun show a few years ago. The dealer has a small shop in an outside building at his home and knew the family. The owner bought it with the intention of using it as a duty gun after being accepted to the PA. State Police. He was not permitted to use it and it looks like it sat around but was cared for. I can't say unfired outside the factory, but it appears not much at all. The owners health was failing and he asked the dealer to sell it for him. I have no reason to doubt the story. It was priced a few hundred dollars over blue book and nothing less. I just happened to be the first one to say I'll Take It. Oh, I didn't get charged 3% for credit card.

I have an early Mod 27 that's NIB as far as I can tell ...

... and it looks like a few members have them in the "pre" model 27 too.

A hard gun to find, mine fell in my lap for a trade of a Mod 19-3 ( NIB gun ) and a coupla' hundred boot at a little 75 table show.
It's the blind pig story!:)

David Carroll helped get this for me. It was from a collector. Cannot remember who. Almost got a 3.5", but settled on the 5". Wish I could have afforded both sizes. Someone took real good care of this. Don't think I have the tools and all, but the box numbers and the gun looks unmolested. Sorry for showing the same pic again.

Think it would be one of the last five I would knowingly part with. Yes, I am partial to the 5" magnum. Love to have a Pre 29 in 5" to go with it.

Spectacular
The boys and girls in Springfield sure knew what they were doing
Great photo

I'll bet rkmesa has one in the box with all the tools and paperwork, probably engraved![emoji41]

...actually not...:( I have a lot of pre-27s, many of which are in great condition and with boxes and tools, some of which are also beautifully engraved. But, I don't think that I have seen more than 1 or 2 engraved 5" pre-27. The only one that I can recall is a 5" that was engraved for one of the Wessons (I don't think it has a box). It is a very nice gun and resides in a great collection of engraved S&Ws. I wish the owner would post a few photos here on the forum...

... And I am still looking for that perfect 5" pre 27, mint in the box for $1K...;) I'm probably going to be looking for a long time (or pay a lot more). But I do have to tell you - it is the hunt that is the fun part.

This thread is hurting my feelings cause I don't have one. I need a safe place.

I believe many of these "NIB" Colt Pythons which are often labeled "unfired" to probably be unfired, but after a refinish. Colt still refinishes many of their post war DA revolvers. Ford's of Florida told me they get 8 or 9 Pythons in per week for refinishing. Since "unfired" (after factory) is so hard to prove, its unwise to claim such things, and unwise to pay a premium for such things.

I'm with you on this one Jim.
I personally find most colts to be overpriced.

So if it's a pre 27 5" or 27 5". With all accessories and box that is all original and in mint condition. All matching numbers. What would the value be???

I just have the gun and box without cleaning tools. I think mine would come in a little north of $2000.00. My opinion only. Other thoughts welcome either way.

I have a "pre 27", that is SO lacking in original finish, with untold thousands of fired rounds, no box, docs, or tools, an extreme amount of holster wear, less the original grips, and the beginnings of too much end shake.

It reminds me so much of ME, I wouldn't trade it for one straight from the factory, circa 1954; and,.... it serves greatly as a good-will item, cause one look at mine will make most all others SEEM, "NIB" !

I just searched through the completed Gunbroker auctions for pre-27's with original grips and there were not many for sale and even fewer completed auctions that ended in a sale.

IMHO, any high condition pre-27 with matching grips and box would easily go for $2,000 and would likely sell for at least $2,500.
