I have become fond of the reloads with my M22 and want to build my 629-6 2 1/2" at my ultimate carry revolver.
Badger boot grips, tuned action, moonclipped, bobbed hammer, totally smoothed...
I am just curious how the moonclips work with the rimmed cartridges. I know they work amazing with my .45acps.

You might want to see if you can buy one moon clip for the 44 and experiment before getting your cyl cut. It works but I would not want to carry a full moon clip for defense unless it was in a rigid carrier - too much chance of it bending. 45 acp clips are much sturdier. If you are planning on using your -6 for defense you might want to loose the lock. Last fall I helped an older gentleman at our range unlock his 629-6 mountain gun. Haven't heard too many stories about steel guns locking up - mostly the lightweight guns. But, not everyone is a believer in lock failure. Least of all S&W.

When a new S&W comes home... it gets the same treatment I always give them...
Oiled up, buffed up, make sure there is no lock, then to the range to shoot the hell out of it.

I will see about getting my hands on a moonclip and carrying it like I normally would for a while before I commit to having the pistol cut for it.
Thanks for the advice.

Just that it kicks like a mule. I am a moon clip fan. I also have 5 686s that are moon clipped a 627 & a 625. yes I do like moon clips.
almost forgot the 242 is moon clipped

I've been toying with the idea of getting a new 21-4, de-locking it, getting a moon clip conversion, and using it for IDPA. I don't have a revolver I can shoot in ESR, and I'd kind of like to play around with the .44 Special some.

I handload, so I'm not worried about ammo costs (in fact I can make major with a minimum load using a 240 grain LSWC using the same type and weight of powder I use for my 158 grain .38 Special +P). However, .44 Special brass is dear, and I'd very much like to be able to shoot it in matches and still get to keep all my brass. So, moon clips seem like a good idea.

Anyone shoot IDPA with a moon-clipped N-frame .44? It seems like the longer, nose heavy .44 Specials might be a little slower to load than moon-clipped .45ACPs, but I'm not sure it would really make enough difference to matter.

It occured to me today that cutting my 629 MG's cylinder for moonclips is a lot cheaper way to be competitive in ESR without springing for a .45 ACP gun, more brass, different bullets, and more dies.

And the cylinder can still be used without the clips.

It actually looks like it wouldn't be too hard to make ESR power factor (165,000) with the .38 Special +P using a heavy bullet. I might look at getting the model 64 converted first and seeing how that goes.
