Anyone have a 4 Inch M29-1 Nickel?

Not a marked -1 but the next best thing. This Md-29 has everything a -1 has but is not marked -1. It has the cut out on the ejector rodand a "L" on the rear of the cylinder face. I call it my Stealth Md-29-1.

Below is a link to Chuck Odom's expert commentary on the 29-1 which displays a 4" Nickel Model 29 like Bravastars as well as the 2nd known nickel 4" model marked 29-1. Chuck also states that no 29-1's have been encountered with an "L" Stamp Cylinder....i believe both of the Model Marked 4" Nickel 29-1's are also 4 screws, is that correct Bill?

Although not nickel, or a -1, here is a 4" Blue 29-2 with "L" Stamp Cylinder shipped in October 1962, amongst 29-1 production.

Will, Doc, that makes me feel a little better. I traded one off 15 years ago as Roy said they never made any. The chances are it was a re-do but it looked good. The trade happened so fast I didn't have time to even take the grips off. Of course the guy that has it won't let it go although it just sits with 100 others that he doesn't even look at.

A hoarder. He also hoarders huge pieces of junk steel equipment and anything else he can drag into his clutches and pile on his land.

It is correct that no 29-1 has been found with an L stamped on the rear surface of the cylinder. I have a 5-inch 29-2 shipped in March 1963 that has an L stamped there and have owned or handled several more. Several Model 29s like Jim's have been documented. They should have been stamped MOD. 29-1, but for some reason, were not.

I just read Chuck's expert thread on the mystery of the -1s, or lack of them. I hope to look at one soon. His remarks are so intense I'll print them out and put in the car !

Thanks,Chuck

Dan here is the other known 4 screw 29-1 and like Bill's 004, it is a nickel 4 screw 4 inch barrel. I can't imagine there is not another few of these out there somewhere but as of yet none have shown up. Like 004, there is no L on the cylinder face. Also note there are only 7 #s separating this one from bravastar's. It never pays to try and figure out appropriate model stampings by the serial numbers.:)

Dan....Only two 29-1s with a 4-screw frame and extractor rod/stem with a lefthand thread are known. S220004 surfaced on the Forum many years ago and I thought the person who posted it was mistaken, but 29-1 bought it and it turned out to be correct. The second one surfaced several years later.

Forgive my dumbness, what does the "L" on the cylinder indicate?

The L indicates the revolver has an extractor rod and stem with a Lefthand (improved) thread to prevent the rod from loosening because of recoil. The small relieved area behind the knurled tip on the rod also indicates it has a lefthand thread.

Dan, let's see if anyone will post some pics of any nickel 4 screw 29 in the S219XXX-S230XXX range. You'd be surprised to see all the variations that might produce.:)
Chuck

Back to top. If anyone is looking at this and has a Model 29, 29-1, or 29-2 in nickel in the serial number range S219XXX-S230XXX please let us know.
Chuck
