500 chatter seems to have throttled back a little lately, but lots of folks here own them.

Two rounds or so through one that belongs to a friend convinced me I could do without one. His gun is a Performance Center model, 7.5" barrel with comp. Recoil came straight back - seemed to concentrate in my forearm and shoulder!

Not a lot of fun!

Those things are way too much gun for me to try to learn to shoot accurately.

It is a hunting cartridge, pure and simple. Way too much penetration for responsible self defense.

Besides, the guns are huge, recoil slows second shots tremendously and they are only fiveshooters.

I doubt that one out of a hundred of us on this forum could shoot a 4-inch 500 with factory ammo well enough to pass on most law enforcement qualification courses of fire.

And, if you ever did shoot someone with it, the civil court procedings would be very bad for you.

So call them and inquire about speedloader availability and which factory load they recommed for CCW in the big city.

Or the small city.

I've got one of the 8 3/8" barrel version S&W500. Shooting hot loaded 350 grain JHP reloads, about 10 rounds is all I want, even with the special recoil absorbing grips that come on it. It's a crowd getter at the range and it's incredibly accurate.

Here's a picture (not me) of a S&W 500 being shot at night:

Its waaaaaaaaaay too heavy to carry for a ccw. I have carried for years and I can tell you that you want a much lighter gun. Like a model 60, or a model 66 or 19 with 2 1/2 inch barrel. Even a 3 1/2 model 27 is hard to carry without suspenders and a stiff belt. In a shoulder holster your left shoulder will be a few inches shorter at the end of the day. A 4' .500 is best for sporting use. Way too powerful for self defense!

I have owned my 4" S&W 500 for 18 months as well as a 5" 460v. Love both but the 500 especially. I use the Hornady 300 grain SST cartridges with the 500. Recoil not as bad as I thought.

S&W has a $75 rebate on both models until December 31, 2008. I paid about $875 each.
