I was thinking that an mp 340 would be a good addition to my gun collection because it would be easy to take care of. I also already have a ton of .357 stuff since I have a 586. I also have a 1911 but I would like to have a pocket gun. This gun has a lighted front sight which would be cool. I am a pretty big dude and can shoot an sp101 with max loads so I think I should be able to handle a 125 out of the 340 at about 1200 1300. How do 9mm and .357 ballistics compare out of a 2 inch barrel?

The 9mm 147 grain GDHP round goes 985 fps out of a 4 inch bbl. The 357 mag 135 grain GDHP short bbl round travels at 990 fps from a 2 inch bbl. From this, I would say that 9mm standard bbl ballistics are pretty much equal to 357 mag ballistics from a snub. I have the M&P360. It's the same revolver as the M&P340 except that it has an exposed hammer. The recoil from my scandium J frame was brutal to me with 357's. I say, "to me" because lots of folks on this forum say they can handle it. I now carry Speer 135 gr 38+P short bbl rounds in a 442. I would say that the 340 is a good choice because I now appreciate the ease of draw from the pocket holster that my centennial allows.

snub

double tap lists a 125 at 1425 which should be pretty good out of a j frame..

I have an M&P 340

Great gun.

When I first got mine using the standard grips it would bite me on the front of my trigger finger and draw blood.

I changed the grips to a slightly longer pair of Uncle Mikes that came on my model 60 and 317.

This changes the recoil in such a way that it no longer hits my finger even with full powered 158 grain 357 loads.

I did have a problem with it when I first got it. The barrel/shroud was misaligned and it was shooting about 1 foot to the right and 8 inches high at 15 yards.

I returned it to Smith and Wesson a total of 3 times to get the barrel straight. Sending them the targets I fired.

I am a distinguished pistol shot.

Now it shoots down the sights properly.

Factory 158 grain 357 chronographs out of it right at 1250fps.

I have a load that duplicates this and another load that uses 357 cases and shoots at 38 special speed with 158 grain bullets.

I tried other lighter bullet weights but they shot low. The gun seemed to be regulated with 158 grain bullets.

I carry the M&P 340 with me in the desert in Cougar country and have faith in my ability to use it.

Get yourself one. You will enjoy it. Nice and light and fits in a simple sleeve holster in my back pocket. Bo belt required, just a little sewing of my pocked to support the holster sleeve.

If you have any other questions please let me know.
