Anyone have magic jack?

Me and all the old farts in the neighborhood have a 20 member tin can on a string thing going on. The hard of hearing members use coffee cans for sound boost. That little stinker Betty across the alley insists on hanging laundry on her string which attenuates the signal thru her bloomers. The town I live in wants to put a tax on our system.

My local phone service is the only internet provider. Have to have a landline for interweb.
FaceTime we use for Mexico/Central America.
South Texas is actually like a foreign country... Guess which one.

There is also a system called Uuma. It's the same concept as majic jack but reportedly has better quality. It also has a one time fee to get your number switched over. We are looking at both systems now as Vonage is costing me $30/mo which is all of $1/call when I average out it's minimal use.

Do you mean 'ooma'? Another service you might take a look at is nettalk. Cost is reasonable.

Plus, your router (or modem) may not be consuming 100w like a computer but is still consuming energy, adding to your usage/bill...

Well yeah.. but the router is always on at my home. My home network is required for lots of stuff to operate both in and away from home. The only time I purposefully unplugged the router in the past decade or so was to replace my G router with an N router.

Glad this is being discussed. Over time no friends or family call me on
my land line anymore. I always use my cell phone to make calls myself.
I dropped long distance off my land line a long time ago. I basicly use
it as a answering machine. It's nice to have a number to give the doctors and dentist office and etc. It says to leave a msg and I call
them back when I want to. I only give my cell phone number to family and friends. If magic jack works I may switch to it.

I tried it for a year and had poor luck.

It worked well in Az but when I returned for the summer

to MN I could call long distance but not locally

apparently MJ co did not pay access fee for 320 area code

I could call 612 (Mpls) or 480 (Mesa) but not a number 500' away.

I went with Verizon Home phone connect; works well for me and saves money.
