Welcome to the forum.
As a matter of fact I have one in my left front (non-dominant) side pocket right now. It has lived there continuously almost since I bought it a few months ago. In warmer weather it lived in my Kramer Confidant shirt holster. I literally forget I have it on in either location. The little sucker is not fun to shoot with full power Magnums, but I'll bet it hurts a lot worse on the other side. It has become my "always" gun.

i'll be shooting .38 specials at the range primarily with a few full loads to get the feel. i will be carrying .357 loads when not at the range. the way i see it if god forbid i have to use it for self/family defense i won't feel the recoil with the adrenaline pumping.

in my opinion, the 340pd is the ultimate concealed carry handgun. it is NOT the ultimate target gun! 158 gr 357s are all i have ever used in mine. i have tried several different brands and designs but have settled on the fed h-s 158 load.

i bought a box of the federal hydra shoks for carry and .38 specials for the range.

Uh oh - maybe not such a good idea unless your first gun was a 329PD!

I use a pocket holster with my 340. There are several types and you need to select one based on what pocket you intend to carry the gun in. (pants, jacket, etc.)

It would certainly be a good idea to begin with some lighter loads in that thing. With full-charge .357s, it is a handful. :)

I have the 340PD and the M&P340 and love 'em both. Just watch what ya fire outta the 340PD, as they are sometimes gonna have the bullet-pull from high-power rounds in such a light-weight revolver. I had it happen to me with full-bore Remington GoldenSaber 125-gr. Then, when I switched to those rounds specifically for short-barrels, I have not had another incident with any brand.
As far as pocket-holsters go, just go with what works best for you. I use a Don Hume and a WRB, but that's not to say others are not better. This is just what I found works for me. Carry safe and good luck.

great info guys, thanks. i'm still new at the handgun thing. actually i'm still waiting for the judge to deem me worthy of my 2nd amendment. i live here in the communist state of ny, where the criminals are treated better than the law abiding citizens. i submitted my and my wife's paperwork 10-16-09. she's had her permit since 5-10. i just had my interview 8 weeks ago. and now i'm just waiting for the final stage. she's going to have to put my 340 on her permit so Santa can put it under the tree.

I have had mine for about six years and love it. I shoot about 20 rounds of .357 then have to switch to .38's. You will like it.

My constant companion for the last 7 years.

I have had my 340pd for about a month. I traded for it from a previous owner. He wanted more than 5 rounds, but loved the carry weight. I have tried 357 mag in the lite-weight and will switch to a 38 special load. The 357 Mag is a handful for recoil. I may just use regular 38 spec, not +P. I just ordered a CT-305 laser grip for mine. Good luck with your 340pd, love mine for carry.

340sc

I have the 340sc and really like it. It does let you know it's there when you shoot full house loads but with Remington 125gr medium velocity (if you can find it) or the available mid load 125gr Golden Sabres it's no big deal. I always carry 357 125's in mine but I'm fortunate enough to also have a 442 if I want to carry a 38. With an Uncle Mikes pocket holster and Eagle secret service smooth rosewood grips, a speed strip or two, and you're dialed in :)

I have one that I love. It is definitely not a target gun, but it is the best pocket carry option out there. 357s sting, especially Buffalo Bore 125 gr GDHPs but 38s are no problem. I'd probably recommend a very light 357 for personal defense, the big boomers just take way too much time to get back on target.

Having the power to weight ratio is very comforting with the 340 stoked with mid range 357 loads. No handgun is a "sure thing" but that's about as close as it gets for a pocket gun. I carry mine more than any other handgun I own.

See my avatar.
I've owned a B36, N37, B38, N49 (still), N442 (still), 640 (38) (still) and my 340 PD.
NOTHING carries better in your pocket.
I shot Federal "Low Recoil" 357 (Shame on Federal. It's a FULL POWER 357),
Speer GDSB 357 & 38+P,
Corbon DPX 357 & 38+P, and the load I carry in it,
Buffalo Bore 125 grain 38+P.
If those were not available, I'd load it with DPX +P.
I have read that Scandium guns don't like lead,
otherwise it would be loaded with BB 158 non +P.
Follow up shots are most important to me,
which is why it's loaded with +P's.
I'm not a cop and don't have to arrest anyone.
If I have to use the PD, I believe it will be at a range of 8 feet or closer.
At that range, I am comfortable with +P and my ability to shoot
with accuracy and speed.
I also believe if it was built strong enough to shoot 357's, it can shoot ANY +P.
The 120 minimum weight bullet applies ONLY to 357's according to 2 people at S & W.

DO NOT USE PERFORMANCE PLUS PLATINUM IN 38 SPECIAL OR 357.THE 38 RUNS A 60 GRAIN BULLET AT 1705 F.P.S. & THE 357 OVER 24OO F.P.S. I SHOT IT IN MINE & IT ERODED THE CYLINDER FACE ON 3 CHAMBERS.CURISOTY IS EXPENSIVE. TITANIUM CANT TAKE THE HEAT.

I think the 340PD with the red ramp sights (163061) will be my next purchase vs the Kahr PM9 or MK9 I was sniffing around. I just cant get myself to trust a micro semi-auto like I can with a revolver.

I already have a Model 60 pro and a 638. I love them both but might think about parting with the 638 if I get a 340PD just to lighten the load on the pocketbook.
