It is being reported that 8 "unregistered' firearms were found at Chumlee's residence. I find this report remarkable since the governor purportedly cancelled the registration requirement for Las Vegas and its county last year.
Anyone know what's going on?

I live in the LV area. All I can say is that it is just more of "Yellow Journalism" slanting a story to maximize the sensationalism. 'Chumlee' must not be eligible to possess firearms, so the reporters are twisting the situation around with more spin. The So. Nevada requirement to register handguns was dropped about a year ago. So no firearms 'must' be registered here except the usual NFA guns and appliances. I don't think that anyone has represented that the firearms found in his possession are all NFA items. ...............

In Nevada and (I believe) under federal law you are disqualified from possessing firearms if you are in possession of a controlled substance. That is what makes Chumlee a prohibited person.

As for gun registration in Nevada, up until a year or so ago, we were required to register handguns if we resided in Clark or Washoe County. It was known as the Blue Card system. This was instituted in the 1960s, supposedly as a law enforcement measure. However, given who owned Vegas and Reno at the time, I think it was more for their benefit.

It is alleged that during the whole of its life, the Blue Card system was instrumental in solving one shooting crime.

The other gag with the system is that if ownership was transferred there was no way of returning your Blue Card and getting it off your name. California is the same, I believe. So, MANY handguns in the valley were "registered" to multiple people.

I suspect,as is typical, the writer didn't know what he was talking about.

This.

As stated, we did have to register guns here in Clark County until a year ago - a holdover law from the bad old days of the mob. That's over and done with. If you have a valid CCW issued after July 2011, you may even purchase without a background check needing to be run.

I bought a pistol last week in a gun shop here in Vegas. Filled out the 4473 form on a laptop, let them run copies of my DL and CCW, gave them the cash, and was out the door with my purchase. The entire transaction took 20 minutes.

Most local journalists are completely clueless when it comes to weapons and the laws.
