Do you remember your first experience, shooting or watching someone shoot a real gun? What kind of gun was it? I was 8,at my grandparents. My grand paw was letting my older cousins, young teens, shoot a beer can off a fence post. It was a Remington 12 gauge pump shotgun. They only shot one time, due to the kick ..I didn't shoot lol

I was eight years old and my older brother and I were at a church "turkey shoot" with my uncle Laverne. My brother always thought he was better than me at everything. Long story short, the first gun I ever shot was an H&R "Topper" 20 Ga. Brought home a turkey on the first shot. I was hooked! My brother went home empty handed. Heh heh heh:)

I believe, other than early TV and the movies, the first person I saw shoot a real gun was me.

My Dad was the best shot I had (and still have) ever seen.

He could light a match off a fence post, and do any number of tricks with an old Gamble's single shot rifle.

But, before that, I had no idea he could shoot and I pestered him to take the old 22 out to my Grandparent's farm so I could shoot it. He did and loaded it, then handed it to me to shoot at a small can on a fence post about 20 yards away.

I hit it and was hooked. Shot and shot that gun for years before he finally let me have a bolt action repeater. I was never as good as he was, but I finally (many years later) understood why he insisted I use only the single shot.

He insisted rabbits and squirrels be head shot only (forgive me if I posted this before), so when I missed and hit the body, I left it in the woods for the scavengers rather than face his genuine wrath.

Both he and my uncle could "bark" squirrels off a tree (hit the bark and the bark of the tree would hit the squirrel and kill it, or the fall would do it. Not a mark on the squirrel! My uncle hunted squirrels (head shots only) with an old Colt Woodsman 22 auto.

I still recall my first shot and then my astonishment at watching my Dad shoot.

Later, about 1958-9, a Highway Patrolman came to our school and did a shooting exhibition in our gym. He was good, and I remember everyone but me thought he must be the best shot in the world.

Quite vividly - I was visiting my grandmother and uncle in Salem, VA, just outside of Roanoke. My uncle took me out in a cornfield and we shot his single shot .22. I was 6 years old at the time.

The first time I saw someone shoot I was about 6 years old and we were visiting my aunt and uncle on their farm near Pulaski Iowa. My dad and uncle were shooting a Luger someone had brought home from WWII. I was greatly impressed.

I was around ten and my dad and I were in the woods with a .22 rifle and his 16 gauge shotgun. I had been hunting with him for about 5 years and kept bugging him to let me shoot the 22. Finally he hands me the shotgun. Happy to just have an opportunity, I hoisted the heavy bolt action to my shoulder and "boom". Almost knocked me down. To this day I wonder if dad actually knew I wanted the .22 and just thought he'd teach me a lesson about nagging.

I was in the Boy Scouts at a week long camp called Goshen. I spent most of my time at the shooting range shooting single shot .22 rifles. One of the guys that ran the range laughed at one of my targets sayin' that I only hit it 3 out of 5 times until his buddy told him that 3 of the shots went through the same hole in the bullseye and made a tiny little cloverleaf. I qualified for an expert marksman certificate but decided that I don't need a piece of paper saying I can shoot a gun, I know I can.
I regret that decision, It would have been cool a keepsake from my childhood.

I was old enough to walk the corn fields with my dad and brother when he would go pheasant hunting. I saw him knock a big old Pheasant cock out of the sky with an old sears 12 ga single shot shotgun.

And they filmed it!

I was ten-my dad got a 1911A1 and an 03A3 from the CMP-I was afraid to shoot the Springfield-and they filmed me shooting the Colt-anticipating the recoil, I'm grimacing-and the trigger won't work-of course it's on safe.
