I get GUNS , G&A , Shooting Times , Handguns , Rifle Shooter and the NRAs American Rifleman. I think GUNS and it's sister American Handgunner are the best mags out there. Well written , excellent photos , truly usable info. Ya can actually READ it over and over. The others are just ad flack for the manufacturers.

If I had to pick just one , GUNS would be it.

Actually I'm not renewing Handguns or Rifle Shooter. The way the others (G&A-ST) are getting , I'll probably drop them too.

I did. I just canceled my subscription. Not because it was bad but it is ONLINE. I still like to read things on paper and have something to flip pages, pictures etc.. You know the joy of reading stuff. But Gun mags are all pretty much ads, and every gun is wonderful or tactical etc. I like the Dillion Press free catalog with our own John Marshall's (Paladin) articles. The girls are nice too.:D
But yes, I'ts a good mag.
I only get the NRA Rifleman now.

I like Handguns & American Handgunner. Another you might consider is Gun Tests (Gun Tests the consumer resource for the serious shooter.), the Consumer's Report for all firearms and one of the best I've ever read.

Sorry to disagree but no way is Gun Tests even close to the serious testing of Consumer Reports. I have been a member of CU/CR for over 30 years.

Gun Tests is just a few guys opinions. No statistical, scientific testing. You and I (if we had the money) could get a bunch of guns and test them.
Kinda like the movie review guys thumbs up or down.

I remember one of there test for revolvers, where one of the tested samples was a out of production S&W, they didn't like it either. So a sample of three was really two.

GUNS, at the less than $10.00 a year price, is a good deal. I wouldn't want to pay much more for it though. It makes good "throne room" reading.

I had no idea it was online until I got on some email list several months ago which sent me the invite to fill out a survey, and then I started getting the magazine on line. It is lots of ads, but at least it is paperless, less clutter in the house.

"Guns" Magazine...

"Guns" Magazine has been around a very long time... I used to read it often in the early 70's. Used to be the home of some very good writers such as George C. Nonte, Dean Grinnell, Jack Lewis and others. Was always a less glitzy gun mag than "Guns and Ammo" or "Shooting Times". Kinda like how "Carcraft" would be compared to "Car and Driver".... More of a Commonman's Shooting Magazine.

I've read about all of the gun rags since the 1960's and sold some articles to them.

If I was to subscribe to any today, Guns would be the one.
Don't forget, Gun Week, especially for Second Amendment rights reporting.

And, Rifle and, Handloader have their place, especially for Brian Pearce's material.

At the price cited, I'd jump on it. But their renewal rate will probably be much higher.

Exactly. No formal test protocols, idiotic comparisons of firearms that ought not be compared (New England Firearms vs. Blaser, etc.) sloppy writing, invisible editing, fish wrap, at best...

It goes back to the late 50's at least. I remember they published a lot of Charlie Askins' controversial articles that were designed mainly to sell magazines and not much else. One that stood out was "The 30-06 is Obsolete!"

Askins told me personally that he wrote that stuff because upset readers would squawk to the editor, proving that his material was being read. Happy readers seldom write letters.

As to Gun Tests they have info on firearms that you will not see in any other publication, and while it may not meet the rigor of Consumer Reports, there is nothing else out there even close. Most gun mags have guns to be tested provided by the manufacturer. Gun Tests buys them and owes no allegence to anyone. I guess that is what this Forum is all about, free exchange of ideas.

I have been subscribing to Handgunner and American Handgunner for many years. They are now in their 35th year of publication. The ten dollars is a great deal. My renewal rate for the year is $9.00 for each. Can't beat that deal for two great magazines. Stay away from Gun Test. It is expensive and not worth the money. I was a subscriber for many years and was turned off of the guns their were comparing. Another source you may want to look into is The Gun Club of America, The GCA Connection from the American gunsmithing Institute. For $29.95 a month, you receive the guntech Magazine and a DVD magazine which includes the latest on tools, Ask the Gunsmith questions, Product reviews including the shot show, Contests, Firearm evaulations on new guns right from the manufacture in an unopened box, and disassembly/Reassembly courses of many of the old and new guns by their master gunsmith Ken Brooks. Also, you have access to their web site, as a member, and ask Ken gunsmithing questions on how to which is included in the price. There are many discounts offered from the manufactures for being a member. I have been a charter member since it started four and a half years ago. Log onto AGI's website for more info. They have over 2000 members and going strong. Oh, by the way they have an online meeting once a month with their instructors with questions and answers at your disposal. They do not pull any punches when it comes down to positives and negatives on a gun they are evaulating. I am a Life Member of the NRA and I subscribe to the American Rifleman. This is all I need to keep me current in this vast world of growing firearms and their technology.
