i was thinking about using a carbon fiber tube to make a custom handguard for my 15-22.i have seen carbon handguards on AR's before and some .22lr conversions.i already have figured out a way to mount the tube to the barrel with a simple little setup i designed,i would just have to remove my barrel to take off the stock guard to do it.so anyone do this or try to do this yet????i have always loved the look to the carbon fiber so it just seems right to use a carbon tube for my handguard.i could mill a few slots in the tube to mount magpul rails to it(like the grooves in the stock magpul guards)and maybe add some milled slots around the tube for a custom look and to shave some weight(not that it would be needed).

Hey,

This sounds like a cool idea, if you're talking about what I think you are... Can you post a pic or link to an AR that has what you're trying to do?

I think I get it, but not sure... Sounds like a worthwhile thing...

Yes. A few have removed the hand guard and converted to an AR barrel nut, basically giving you limitless options. Tacticool22 has the barrel nut wrench for the 15-22 as well as a barrel nut adapter. There are a few thread here if you look through the forum that have pics and process. Also some good videos on youtube.

it has been my experience when cutting CF, it will eat your Carbide tipped cutting tools, and do it outside with a fan blowing the dust away from you. That stuff is nasty!

Good luck

i would be using all carbide tools and a vacuum to keep dust to a minimum.

Why go to all that trouble when you can just use the proper tools and remove the stock quad rail and mount an existing CF handguard on the 15-22 using the conversion adapter from Tacticool22 or others. For one thing once you take the stock handguard off the factory barrel nut will not work well because it is designed to tighten up using the compression between the barrel and the stock handguard. On the otherhand if you just use the Tacticool22 adapters you can mount one of these with no problem in about 15 minutes or less.

well i like to build stuff in general so this would just be another DIY project for me.thank you for the links though,i wasnt aware there were so many carbon guards out there so i might just go that route.i need to figure out which is most cost effective to do.i can buy a 50mm diameter x 1000mm long(approx 39")for around $100.i can make any adapters needed to fill in the gap left behind from removing the stock guard and to hold the carbon tube in place.plus i could make the tube cuts any way i want them to look.just my brain getting slightly crazy.

I'm thinking about upgrading my Stag 3G with one of the AP ones. If I do that I'm obliged to put one on my AR15-22 practice rifle also. Likely the Taccom one on the rimfire.

yeah the carbon guards look really nice and clean and those Taccom uppers with carbon are crazy nice looking.i have just opted to use a Magpul mid length hand gaurd since i already had one.im just wating on my paycheck to order the last few parts i need.i have to buy a gasblock and the 4 piece kit(adapter, adapter wrench, barrel removal wrench, and barrel vise blocks) from Tacticool.i have the front ring already and the delta ring is on order.
