Anyone use Brownell's Competition Rear Blade?

I Installed one a few months ago, it does sit back a little further than OE and all the other guys that I know that have installed them experience the same slight wobble when its done.
I have it, I like it, but I really don't know how long I'm going to keep it on, It does give you a better sight picture but the extension on how far it sticks out, which isn't much, concerns me for competition and also what it might snag onto during a draw.

I suspect the Brownells sight is made by Weigand Smith Wesson Rear Sight Blade K L N. If not, it's an exact copy.

I have them on 2 K-Frames I use for IDPA and they have been fine so far. I don't think I have come anywhere near snagging it on a cover garment. On one I use the factory front sight with the red insert and on the other I use a custom "thinned" .250 tall "all black" front that's .100 wide. I prefer the .140 wide rear notch with the .100 wide front sight (and no dots or colors).

It's "normal" for the sight to wobble slightly but I have not noticed any ill effects from this in actual shooting.

I have read that Randy Lee at Apex Tactical is making a steel replacement rear sight but I have not seen one.

Thanks for the reply. I read on the Brian Enos forum that Apex is making one as well. There are a few pics up and it looks quite good.

This sight
https://www.brownells.no/COMPETITIO...lack-Target-K-Frame-L-Frame-N-Frame-078000013

Has a hight of.160. In another tread there was a tabel showing model 14 have a blade hight of .126.

Do's this mean that this sight blade is not suitabel for a Model 14-3 with serial number 4K81xxx ?

Any idea what can be done with the "wobbeling", as the original sight blade also do ? Tape betwen Sight blade and housing in the slot sight blade slide in?

I agree with cyberiad in that this is probably the Weigand replacement rear sight blade. I have to disagree with him/her in that the wobble is normal. I understand that the wobble is common on those sights where the blade replacement was done by the end user, because of improper staking. I sent my sight assembly to Weigand and had them do the replacement and there was no wobble. Not an option with the blade from Brownell's and Weigand is no longer doing the installation - furthermore they recommend it be done by a qualified gunsmith - probably a result of complaints of sight wobble from the self-installers.

While that sight may not be vulnerable in actual use, I found that it was vulnerable in foam-lined pistol cases where the gun may shift slightly until a hard part contacts the inside of the case - in this instance it was the sight blade. Easily bent back (it is aluminum), but who has confidence in the sight after that?

I subsequently found LPA sights. These are complete assemblies, made of steel, that cover the entire top strap and mount in the factory D&T'd holes. Smith uses these on some of their Competitors models. When I found and purchased them they were being imported by a cottage industry kind of operation and priced accordingly. Currently there are several larger distributors and prices have risen to the point where they are competitive with what I consider to be the best rear S&W sight: The Bowen Rough Country. While I didn't replace my LPA's with Bowen's, I did replace the Wiegand modified factory sight with the Bowen - and any future rear sight changes on my Smith wheelguns will also be Bowen's.

Adios,

Pizza Bob
