So after years of shooting (and owning) exclusively 1911s, with the occasional mag or two through a buddy's Glock or XD or XDM, I decided to join the polymer ranks. After talking to folks at the range, and following Hilton Yam's exploits hot-rodding an M+P 9, I shopped around for a 9TS and found one for $440 at a local gun show.
Being a 1911 guy, I knew going in that I wanted to install an Apex Forward Set Sear and Trigger kit, and ordered it the day after I brought the pistol home. Although the kit arrived within the week, I wanted to try it out in its stock configuration, so I headed to my club and shot some paper and hit the plate rack.
I did not like the stock trigger at all - waaaaay too much pre-travel, heavy pull, and literally no reset, but after a mag or two I had the pistol under control and was hitting the target fairly well. Here are some results from a few weeks ago, before I installed the Apex kit:
Actually, this target was inverted when I shot it, so what looks like a vertical grouping above point of aim is actually low.
Anyway, the following Sunday morning I sat down at my bench with a hot cup of joe and did the install.
I had some difficulty getting the trigger bar to reset under the sear, and also the striker to fall (documented in another thread further down the board) but after talking to the guys at Apex, I finally got it straightened out.
When I got to the range, the difference was immediately apparent. The trigger was crisp and clean, and pulled at about 3.5 pounds. Pre-travel is non-existent and follow through put the rounds exactly where I aimed. Most interesting, however, is that I can actually feel the reset, even though I cannot install the RAM in my TS-model.
Here's the "after" target, same ammo, same load, same distance:
And finally, here's how beautiful the trigger looks after installation:
I am really looking forward to the universal RAM when Apex releases it this spring, and I am also very much looking forward to the Apex barrels whenever they are released (late summer or early fall?)
If you are a 1911 guy and/or love a nice tight, crisp trigger for your M+P, I cannot recommend the Apex FSS+Trigger kit highly enough.
