Apex Polymer Trigger Problem

Yesterday I received my polymer trigger from apex tactical. I immediately put it into my gun and only had to adjust the trigger bar loop once to get the sear to drop. My only complaint with this trigger is that the trigger safety doesn't clear the frame as easily as I would of liked which causes a little hiccup in my trigger pull. Has anyone else had to sand down the catch a little to get a better pull? How much did you take off and how is the trigger treating you now? If I use just the very tip of my finger I can depress the safety enough to get the catch to clear the frame, however when I shoot my normal way the safety just don't depress on it's own enough and hangs up on the frame the tiniest bit which is the most annoying thing in the world to be right now.

If you haven't yet, I'd also send an email to Apex. In the past they've gotten back to me within 24 hrs and have been extremely helpful.

Good luck!

I have sent them an email as of last night, I was just hoping someone on this forum has had the same problem as me. From what it seems with the comp AEK the pull is so light the trigger safety doesn't depress quick enough to clear the frame before everything gets hung up. Maybe putting the stock trigger spring/sear spring back in would remedy this, but I quite like the light trigger pull. However I've also notice with the trigger installation the reset went from bad to non-existent. I can live with that though with my no takeup/overtravel and sub 3 lb pull. I just want it all to work correctly. Also I have IDPA practice tonight and would really like to figure this out as quickly as possible so I can start practicing with the new trigger. So any suggestions, treatments and opinions I am still more then open to!

Apex response:

Hello,
Yes, this does happen from time to time It is OK to sand the back down a little bit to eliminate this feeling. Please be sure to check proper safety function of the trigger after every pull. Taking some material off the safety will allow you to no longer feel that catch.

This really doesn't surprise me. There are very few true "drop in" parts for a gun. A little adjustment isn't really a big deal. I probably wouldn't be happy about it, but I don't have an issue with a little fitting.

Other than that, do you like the trigger?

I slightly modified the catch on my factory S&W trigger. It pissed me off big time feeling that catch. The APEX aluminum one I put in had no problem.

Also if you use the heavier apex spring you can apply enough pressure that neither the Apex or S&W safety's catch.

So I filed down the catch a bit and no it clears no problem while still remaining incredibly safe. I couldn't force a Accidental discharge with clothing or holster. However I went to an IDPA practice tonight and with the new trigger I shot horribly. I need to get used to the lesser pretravel and extremely light trigger pull. I shot about 6 inches high consistently. Need to put some rounds on paper tomorrow and fix myself.

I am not sure I understand why anyone would take a perfectly functional factory trigger out of an M&P and install this type of trigger. This type of pistol needs to be, above all, reliable. Yet, when I read the original post, there seems to be many adjustments and other "tweaks" required to make this replacement part work properly. Failure to drop the sear and failure to clear the frame, both of which would result in a failure to fire does not exactly sound like a good result of a replacement part that purports to be better than the factory trigger. I am not sure I would trust my life to such a device.

I installed the aek trigger kit on my 9c and had to do no "tweaking" to it. It clears the safety function much cleaner then stock IMO and much harder to produce an AD since squeezing the bottom of the trigger alone won't set it off like stock. I would and do trust my life on the aek trigger and dcaek kit with stock springs, both on my edc.

Okay everyone just so that I don't get anyone alarmed here and make bad about a product I like, the reason I had to "tweak" my trigger is because I already installed the Competition AEK kit from Apex. If I would of went with the stock/DCAEK trigger return spring and Sear spring I would not of had to worry about filing down the catch. Also lets all remember that this is my "gaming" gun. This gun does not protect my life, however, I would trust it to completely. Last night at IDPA practice we were practicing clearing malfunctions with some bad reloads and out of every gun at practice guess who's gun fired? I had the only gun that cycle these loads which made me feel safer then ever before. I shot 200 rounds last night without even 1 hiccup.

Yeah, that polymer trigger was really designed to work with the entire FSS kit. The kit has a completely different sear than the one in the Competion or Duty/Carry kits. I learned that the hard way when I accidentally put the wrong sear in. The gun just locked up. I had to take out the firing pin and spring from the back before I could take the slide off again!

I love the poly FSS and run it myself in my 9, but would not recommend using it by itself. Get the entire kit.
