Our dishwasher gets run about once a week. There are only three of us, we eat out frequently, and I actually wash the dishes by hand before loading them. When I'm out of town, they may or may not get rinsed first :(. Anyway, when you start the dishwasher, it pumps out any water that may be left in the bottom from the last load. This goes into the top of the garbage disposal and fills the kitchen with a horrible smell. Short of taking everything apart and using a .410 bore brush on it, is there any way to clean out this line and get the smell out? I put about 1/2 cup of bleach in the bottom before I ran it a couple of weeks ago, and it helped a little for that wash, but then it came back. Please help before my wife buys a new dishwasher that will wind up doing the same thing!!!

Vinegar

Try vinegar poured into dishwasher.
It works well on coffee pots.
It works well on frying pans with gunk burned into them.
It is safer then bleach.
It does kill germs.

Just my thought.......

Don't dishwashers generally pump out the water when they are FINISHED with their cycle? It doesn't sound good to have dirty water sitting around for a week. It would be like a clothes washer letting the water stay in the bottom after it was done.

With our dishwasher, there is no leftover water at the end of a load. With our dishwasher, there is a filter on the bottom (inside) of the washer that can be removed and cleaned. It's a cylincrical mesh strainer where the water exits the dishwasher, and is removed by hand with a single twist.

We sometimes use affresh dishwasher cleaner, due to the accumulation of mineral deposits.

Here is what our dishwasher filter looks like. I gently clean it with a toothbrush.

The smell may originate from the garbage disposal if material is left in it and starts to rot. I agree that no water should remain in dw and any that does will be rank. Confirm that the dw completes all of its cycles before opening door

That's like my wife does...our dishwasher has the best gig in town - the dishes go in sparkling clean, I never figured out why they don't just go in the cupboard instead.
