approx. K frame date

Looking at a model 10-5 contoured barrel #D5075XX
It has magnas (not diamond). approx. date it left the factory?
No sign of wear anywhere. Front and rear face of the cylinder are perfect. Don't know if it's ever been fired.

What is the name of the front sight? It appears to me to be a very short, very small ramped sight.

I've always read it called a ramped front sight. Looks like a 1972-73 gun, and the grips are probably original as the diamonds had gone back in the mine by then.

Agree with late 1972, early 1973. My 3 below pics (2 blue, 1 nickel) are:

10-5 mint blue on left D 4649XX (1972)
10-5 blue: D 5315XX (1973)
10-5 nickel: D 9890XX (1977)

The ramp front sight Is called a Baughman named for Frank Baughman who developed it in the.early 1930’s.

I agree that it’s a 1972-73.

I agree that sights can be somewhat confusing.
I am attaching something that cleared it up a lot for me. It is not new information, as it was published in a 1952 catalog.

The photos are great. If the forum could have a saved page with the shapes and names of the sights and one for the grips also it would really answer lots of questions for the newer members. Me too.

I have never had magnas before and they are really growing on me for comfort

None of the sight names shown above apply to your gun, they are target model sights. You have the updated 1/2 round ramped sight for fixed sight K frame models.

This is my 10-5 ( serial number D138) 1968, the 4" is also 1968. Both guns have been fired a few rounds.
I am thinking of some Grashorn grips for it

The 4 inch in the photo appears identical to the one I am looking at. Hondo44 is calling it an "updated 1/2 round ramped sight" for fixed K frame models. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
